What happens if you have water in your ears?

What happens if water accidentally enters a newborn baby's ears while bathing?

  • My mother-in-law just left for her hometown and now I have to take care of my 3-week old baby myself. I'm scared of bathing her, though, because water might accidentally get inside her ears.

  • Answer:

Don't worry about it. Have you ever seen pictures of babies swimming? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEDUrEh7hSU They're fully submerged. Just don't poke anything into the baby's ear. You can clean the outer ear with a q-tip, but DO NOT insert the q-tip into the ear of the baby.

A little bit of water isn't going to do any harm. If she gets a lot of water in her ears all the time she possibly could develop an ear infection if the water doesn't drain out. No way to know for sure if there is water still in her ear. Just don't lay her flat on her back in the water keep her at an angle and she should be fine.

You could sponge-bathe her until you feel safe. Babies do not really need a tub before they can sit up. I wash my girl with little hand towels and only shampoo her over the sink when she is dressed. Works just fine.
