Where can I rent a breast pump?

Breast Pumps/recommendations?

  • I used the Avent manual breast pump with my first. It was okay for a night out or something, but not for pumping enough while I was at work and was awful on my back having to bend over. I was wondering about double electric pumps and what brands most liked. Also, does anybody know about how much it costs to rent one from the hospital? Do I probably just request that when I go to have the baby? Just wondering! Thanks!

The hospital grade one I rented was $5/week. BUT you had to pay a $200 deposit (which they refund when you bring it back) and you have to buy the kit to go with it (the parts that touch the breastmilk) that was $50 BUT they can be used as a manual pump. FYI my hospital didn't rent pumps they just told you which drugstore do ;) The pump worked great, though I hate pumping. If you are pumping in the long term it is probably worth buying an electric pump. However I would talk to a lactation consultant to see if there is a big difference between the regular and the hospital grade. In addition different pumps work for different women. So maybe rent them until you find the one that works, Also, if this applies: WIC often supplies electric pumps at no cost if you qualify for WIC. (So I hear I am not an American)

I recommend the Medela Pump in Style. It is expensive but well worth the money. I used mine for 13 months straight and it worked great. You can even buy the adapter to use it in the car.

Medela brand is the best, I think. I bought mine for about $240 five years ago. Don't mess around with the cheap ones. My local hospital didn't rent out pumps, but they referred me to a local company that did. Look in the business section of your phone book under medical supplies. Typically stores that rent or sell wheelchairs, crutches, etc. will also have breast pumps for sale or rent. good luck!

I looked into renting a pump when I was pregnant and there wasn't much cost savings for me versus buying a new one. Check with your hospital as I am sure they are all different. I also was planning on having more than one child so it made sense to invest in a fairly good one. I bought the medela mini-electric pump and I loved it!!! I did some pretty good research on it and it cam eout on top! It can be purchased in a lot of stores including babies r us. I also purchased the avent manual for when I was travelling and it wasn't convenient to pull out a machine : ) I found it kinda crappy and slow, but I think I was just being poiled by my electric! Good luck!!

I have used a ton of different pumps, and have a pumping & nursing gear review on my blog: http://lizawashere.com/nursing-pumping-gear-faq-reviews/ In a nutshell, if you can find and afford a hospital grade rental, they are the nicest BY FAR. Where I live, they cost $50/month, which is really expensive if you are planning to pump for long. After that, I think the Ameda Purely Yours is more gentle, lighter weight, and all around better than the Medela Pump In Style. Also, all the moms I know who are doctors used the PY, not the PIS.
