How can I block off stairs?

• My baby is intent on climbing them and I've looked up gates for stairs online but for what I'd need it would cost between $100-$140. Too expensive right now. Has anyone used anything else to block off their stairs? The bottom of the staircase is approx. 72 in. and it's at an angle.I'd really appreciate any ideas that might help. Thanks.

  Have you tried checking your local craigslist, thrift stores, or children's consignment stores? I'd call around and ask if any of them have baby gates, also if you have any friends/relatives/neighbors who have young children or who know people with young children ask around and see if anyone can give you one or sell one to you for cheap. If it has rails on both sides you could tie a sheet or tarp across the bottom, just make sure its pulled tight so baby can't climb under it
