Texas medicaid cover circumcision/disharge fee/newborn care in hospital?

  • I had a baby in october 2011 in texas while on medicaid. I thought medicaid paid for everything having to do with the birth and the baby. However i recieved a bill for about $1500 in which I am being charged for the circumcision of my baby (which was done the same day he was born), "newborn care', hospital disharge fees ,preventitive medicines for baby on two day old check up, the baby's vaccine/immunizations for two months.... basically medicaid paid for nothing?!?! I thought that the point of medicaid was to pay for these things?? Is it an error with medicaid or what? The hospital that my son was born in was the one where my dr is, which is the one i was referd to by medicaid?? any help appriciated

Circumcision is a non essential, medically unnecessary procedure. The taxpayers should not have to pay for that. The other things you may have a chance of getting them to cover, but you should know what is covered before you go in, not after. San Francisco and Santa Monica are trying to outlaw the procedure entirely within their city limits.

Circumcision is not paid for by ANY insurance. Be it Medicail or Federal BCBS! That's because circumcision is an ELECTIVE procedure... Circumcision obviously shouldn't add up to $1500, though. I'd contact Medicaid about this. You may have had to call the hospital's billing department and confirm your Medical Card's # and all that. Do it soon so that they will have time to back date it.

I've been to Texas before. Terrible state. I guess you'd need to call and find out what the situation is. But FYI, routine infant circumcision is a medically useless procedure completely unsupported by the science.

If you are about to have a baby boy -- there is no decision to make. He wants his natural penis. Do not let some one amputate parts of his body.
