Formula 1 Clothing?

Does breastmilk stain like formula feed babies on clothing?

  • Answer:

As you may have noticed, there's some variation about staining. My breastmilk has never stained even a little bit, and I used to leak everywhere, so it got on all my clothes. I have heard other moms say that they had problems, though. I think it depends a bit on the individual mom's milk, and whether it's the watery foremilk or the high-fat hindmilk that's involved. But in my experience, most moms don't have trouble with staining. Certainly not compared to formula, especially. ETA: I re-read the answer before mine, and I think the issue is this: Foremilk mostly doesn't stain, because it doesn't have much fat or protein. Hindmilk probably stains like crazy, because it's rich in those things. Most women, if they're going to leak, leak foremilk. But if the previous mom was pumping, then those stains invoved fore- and hindmilk mixed, which is probably why she had trouble with stains, but most bfing moms don't.

Yes, it does.

No. It comes right out in the wash. Just use a stain stick to make sure that all that sort of stuff comes out. Thank you for giving your baby the best. : )

yes i think it will stain but not too much. just make sure you wash the stained shirts and bras right away.

Breastmilk will not stain light colored clothes. It does however leave a darker area on dark colored clothes, just like a grease stain would. If you wash with warm/hot water and an enzyme based detergent, such as Tide, the markings will go away. Another thing that I have noticed, even though the stains on light clothing don't show at all now, after storing the clothes away in plastic storage bins, the stains/discoloration will reappear. One wash and they are gone again. Really.

My daughter's clothes are not stained, but my are. It looks like a grease/oil stain on most of my shirts. Thank goodness they are small stains!

I breastfeed now and have been for the last four months, not one stain on anything. It can not stain anything, its like washing water out of you clothes. If people have stains its coming from some place else. People must be drinking oil right out the bottle or something

nope. watch out for formula stains, i found that even though my first daughters old baby clothes where clean when i packed them away that 3 yrs later when i got them out they had bright yellow spots everywhere the formula had been yrs ago. ( they looked perfect when i packed them up.)

Yes it does stain. Who ever tells you it does not is a boob nazi or does not know. It's just as hard as formula to remove, if not harder, because it is a protein stain more equivalent to fresh blood in composition. It also stains worse depending on what you have eaten (ie: deep colored vegetables or a supplement containing lots of B vitamins) Both my kids have lovely breastmilk stains on ther baby clothes that never came out in the wash, even using stain fighters and oxy clean. They will fade, of course, but not vanish. Sorry, non-staining is not one of the benefits of breastmilk.
