What are some fun activities for cognitive development?

Activities with a 5-month old?

  • My son is 5 months old.. we do daily activities that are educational and fun, including reading.. but I was wanting some new ideas. What do you do with your baby that is fun, helps with development and makes him/her laugh? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Action songs like patti cake and itsy bitsy spider, dancing, walks, lots of time for him to play independently and learn about how things move and what happens when he rolls into furniture LOL. Seriously, my son is not a cuddle bug and doesn't like to sit still. His favorite things right now are these clear stackable blocks with objects inside and a really noisy rattle. Anything that makes noise gets attention as well as boxes and the big dog food bag that he can't quite get to LOL. I also like to introduce something completely new every few days, whether it's a toy, a song or an activity, a new location, etc... My son is now 6 months old and the new thing today was baby rusks. It took all of about half a cookie before he got the idea that this was yummy and he could feed it to himself. He's currently working on the second one in the serving package and has figured out how to take smaller bites and hang onto it already. If he drops it on the tray he can pick it up, if he drops it in his lap it's more difficult and I have to help. However at this point he has determined that not dropping it is the best way to go at it. I've learned how extremely messy they are! At this age I can keep my son amused for half an hour just by going to a room he isn't familiar with like the basement or the hallway upstairs LOL. Oh, and if you want him to laugh, toss him up in the air or put him on your knee and bounce him wildly while screaming Earthquake!! Earthquake also works in the stroller and grocery carts. He also laughs when Daddy kisses him when he hasn't shaved for a few days. Singing his favorite songs will also get a big smile out of him.

My baby is almost 5 months, and I do a lot of physical growth activities. I help him sit up, stand up, fall down.... I do things to make him giggle, I sing new songs, I talk to him about my day or about what I'm doing, I've introduced him to a mirror... lots of things. My son laughs when he falls from sitting/standing onto the bed, when I tickle him with kissies on his face, when I tickle his legs, or when I brush him with my hair... It's also fun to introduce new music and dance with him.
