Thesis statement on premature babies?

  • Thesis statement on premature babies? I need help with a thesis statement on premature babies. My paper is going to go over the risk factors of having a premature babie, the treatment for premature babies, & what lasting affects can be for premature babies. I wrote my thesis statement as Black woman and teenagers are more susceptible to having premature babies but she said that was just a fact. Can any help me develop a true thesis statement on premature babies?! Pleaseee & Thanks! :)

Maybe your argument and research should be more about whether or not it's beneficial for state and federal funding to support programs that PREVENT premature births. In other words, it costs us, as a country, via Medicaid and other social services a LOT of money to sustain premature infants. They are a burden in the hospital NICU, require far more interventions and treatment with far longer hospital stays - they are also more susceptible to illness, disease, and neurological disorders than full term babies. But the costs don't stop there - once they are school age preemies can sometimes experience developmental delays that manifest themselves as learning disorders, ADHD, and behavioral issues (as I'm sure you already know). Currently, much funding has been CUT that supports preventative measures--so why don't you focus on whether or not that is justifiable given the short & longterm costs of caring for these children. Preventative measures include prenatal education and care (funded by clinics) education is sometimes funded by large groups like "Access to Prenatal Care" (see below) and the March of Dimes. I don't know what state you're in, but if it's Republican-leaning you'll see that this funding tends to get cut quite readily (true in NJ where I am with a Rep. Gov. Chris Christie.) Other support that requires funding includes breastfeeding education (prenatally and postpartum) because that is basically the natural wonderdrug for preemies. The African-American community tends to be the last cultural group to re-embrace breastfeeding (though stats are improving) and this is also a KEY issue and a big obstacle to overcome. Breastfeeding COUNSELORS are becoming more popular in urban areas - they are not as expensive as Lactation Consultants but can get the job done nearly as well. But someone needs to pay for their time, of course.

A thesis statement is something that your paper will make arguments to prove. If your teacher wants a thesis statement, she wants an informed opinion that you will then give evidence to support throughout your paper. Reciting the risk factors, treatment, and prognosis for prematurity is probably not what your teacher is looking for. This is just a regurgitation of facts, and not an informed argument. A thesis statement should be something slightly controversial, so that there are arguments for and against, and you need to find and give evidence to support your side of the argument. Talk with your teacher about the purpose of this paper so that you understand the assignment.

The thesis statement does not have to be the first thing written! Have to done your preliminary research (literature review)? I wish they'd stop teaching how to write papers in HS this way! You're not writing a thesis, that's a graduate school and above type project. Just write your paper and then go back to write your introduction!

Try something like: "Compared to the average middle age white woman, teenagers and black women have a higher chance at having premature children due to their life experiences, situations, and other factors."
