UK folks - What is a "Tesco Clubcard" and why would someone use my email address to obtain one?
-
(none of the cats offered make any sense so I'm putting it here because I know there are UK-based moms here.) Someone with a UK mailing address used one of my (not yahoo) email addresses to sign up for something called a "Tesco clubcard." I know that Tesco is a big UK department store. Then they made a purchase using "Tesco clubcard vouchers" to buy some kind of holiday miles. I went to the site, got them to email the password to my email and changed it. But I also checked the account info and my credit card information is not there or anything. Nothing has been stolen from me except my email address and my last name (on some chick's address in Liverpool.) What's the scam here? Why would someone do this? What the hell is a "Tesco club card voucher."? (also, now that I've taken the account back, I apparently have £13 of "club card points" or something that I cannot use, lol. What should I do with them?

Answer:
It's a loyalty card - they build up points and can either use the points to purchase in store, or put them towards other offers such as holidays, insurance, mobile phones etc. The scam is simply that if they have another card, they can generate more points and get more back from tescos. I'm not sure what you can do with the points, sorry! ETA - Thinking about it, it could be accidental. Perhaps when she registered the email address, she wrote .com at the end instead of .co.uk, I know that this does matter with some email servers. Perhaps she shares your name and accidentaly used your email addy?

From looking around their website, it looks like a Subway rewards card on steroids. They swipe their card whenever they buy something, and then they get one point for every pound they spend. When they get 100 points (or spend 100 dollars), they get one voucher to put towards some rewards prize. It's kind of like a modern version of "green stamps". But, I'm not sure what the scam would be, or why they would borrow someone's email address and name. It seems more like it was someone who is paranoid about giving out their own personal information (so no one steals their identity!) so they found other information to use instead. They probably needed a real email address, but didn't want to give their own. Maybe? Can you cancel the card anyway?

I would also lean towards "accident" here, can't see how could anyone benefit from it. I used to have one years ago when I shopped with Tesco, you can redeem your points against purchases in Tesco (if I remember correctly every £100 gives you a £1, woohoo;) or when purchasing from other retailers that have a deal with Tesco, ie holidays, adventure parks, days out with kids etc. Not sure if you can do anything with the points the other person has accumulated

It's just a reward card, you get points for shopping, depending on how much you spend. It's likely that the person got their email address wrong (maybe it's one letter different or a hyphen or something), but it is ok, there are no financial implications. Though I'm sure they are wondering why they aren't getting the emails! Tesco is a supermarket. Mainly food, but they also sell almost everything in the bigger stores - like tvs and so on. The vouchers are discount vouchers you use when you shop. You get a penny for every pound you spend. There is no way this could have been deliberate. There is no possible benefit from using someone else's email address and the person concerned has obviously lost £13 if you have claimed their reward account. I feel sorry for them.
