Don't you think we should make public universities/colleges free of tuition?
-
i was just thinking about it... and i think they should be. i mean, i dont think PRIVATE colleges should be free, but they should make state colleges free (but obviously theyd still need to be accepted). then we'd have more people working in better jobs, and people would just have more oppourtunities overall.

Le Bac is extremely difficult... It is a completely handwritten test! No multiple choice or fill in the blanks. Not all people even pass the exam. There are many jobs you can still do in France despite this, though. In America, it's not quite the same. What works for one doesn't always work for another. You can make a living w/o college in the U.S. though it can be hard. It is not necessary. So many people take High School for granted... If college is an open, easy option... who says they're going to take it seriously? Running a college is expensive... do you know how many professors they have? How many buildings and the bills, etc? You can't have people just wasting that. And socialism is just stupid! It's not realistic... I want less government power, kay? *Plus, if you want college so bad, work hard for it. Get scholarships! If you really can't afford it, see if you can get financial aids. Do you know that tons of people just go to college for free because of how much federal aid they get?Take out loans if you must! **High fives Jane!**

No that's socialism! hmmm....Tofu that is not the same, college is not mandatory, if you can't afford college then you don't go, that's capitalism for ya. Tofu:I have the right to freedom of speech because it is in the constitution. No one is stopping a person from getting good grades and applying for a scholarship to get money for college. Higher education is a privilege, if it were a ‘right’ it would be free. EDIT: Woo hoo lemon x3 someone gets it.

Yes. In Australia it's only 10,000. Not per year. TOTAL! And in the 1950s, during the Brown vs. Board of Education case, the Supreme Court declared that education was a right. That's why it's illegal to not send your kids to school. It's taking away a human right. So it's really not fair to take away people's rights just because they can't afford college, isn't it? And Jane*, socialism isn't bad...And even if it was, we're not socialist. Jane*: Just because it's not mandatory doesn't mean it's not a right. You have the right to free speech. Does that mean you HAVE to exercise that right? No. And that part wasn't really directed towards you, it was just part of my answer.

No, 'cause they're private. If people want to charge people for their education, you have that right. You don't just mess with someone's business. That's like saying, some people can't afford shoes, so we should make all shoes free. Edit: Tofu, where does it stop? Where do we make the distinction between a right, and a privilege?

Socialism? Yes. Well No. Actually I don't know how I feel on the subject but interesting question.

Only if we limit admission to the most talented students. ..say the top 15%, based on standardized test scores, grades, etc. Furthermore, society should only cover the tuition if the person completes a degree in areas for which the society has a great need. I love school and am pro education, but there are so many unskilled, dimwitted, lazy people who graduate from college. That is fine with me, as long as it's not on my dime!

It's an interesting concept, but it's one that I don't think would work, honestly. Right now, public schools in America are free (to the students, not to run) and people take it for granted. Many people do not like to go to school, and they end up not doing their best with all of their work. If college was free, then people wouldn't have the incentive to go out and work hard in school. Sure it would help for the people who can't afford college, but for those people, there is financial aid, and scholarships that are awarded. So I think the concept is interesting, but whether or not it would work, who's to know?

Yeah, france has amazing school systems! You can either go to a trade school or if you pass the test you go to college and become something really important. I think it would be fine if they did that, a much better option because everyone would be better educated. The the thing is then everyone would go, and there'd really be no advantage. Like you wouldn't be able to say "I went to this college and its so great and pristine" the creepy guy next door could say the same thing... Plus then professors would get paid next to nothing because they will be on government payroll like teachers and they'll start being crappier.

I don't think they should be free, they should only be free if they make it a requirement for all jobs. It would be nice if they lowered costs... lol, I like socialism..

i dont think that's gonna happen, at least not for A WHILE...
