Tips for getting a job when your 17?

What are some tips on getting a job at 17/18 and some good places to apply?

  • I really need/want a job for a few reasons. I don't have a car now, but closer to my 18th birthday, I should be able to get my permit/license. Until then, my dad said that he'd have to drive me. I want to get a job to be more independent for one, but also because I feel that I need to be helping out with money since things are just going to get worse financially when my dad gets his social security in (benefits will drop, rent will go up, etc.) I have already applied to two places, which isn't alot, but I live in a small redneck town so there is not alot of options period. Plus, I don't turn 18 for another 2 months and then my options will expands some because I'll be able to apply at dollar stores and convenient stores. I need tips though, specifically on how to fill out job apps (they always have those 'personality' survey things with all the trick questions and I never know how they want me to answer...obviously I have to give up my individuality if I want a job....) Then, I need help with the interview part as well-what do I do, say, where, etc..... Basically, I need tips that will enhance my changes of getting a job. Also, are most part time jobs going to care if I have scene-semi scene hair and/or makeup? Of course, I would tone it down for the job, but if I have-say black hair with red and orange accents-are they going to totally look over me? Would it be alright if, when (if) I go into the interview, if I ask them if it's acceptable and if they would prefer me to dye it a solid color? I have no work experience (other that volunteer work at an animal shelter) and I get nervous around people I don't know, so I'm well...nervous of course.

  • Answer:

Well you don't want a crappy kind of job, the kind that 14 and 15 year olds get. Maybe in a restaurant or clothes shop? As long as you look smart I'm don't think your appearance matters. Dress smartly, don't wear too much make-up and make your hair look neat. If you prefer to, you can dye it one solid colour or ask your boss what they think, otherwise it should be fine.
