Do you have the skills and knowledge to sail solo around the world?

Parents and Others: Would you encourage (or down right enable) your 16 year old to sail solo around the world?

  • http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/7387699/defence-force-joins-sailors-rescue-team/ It's a bit dangerous, innit???Surely if a person has a desire to sail around the world, they could do it just as well at 21...with an offsider?

  • Answer:

I don't know, darling...I wondered about this, and about the young kid who just climbed Mt. Everest, too. I tend to be overprotective, so I try to be aware of it and I consciously try to let go when the offspring wants to do things that seem a bit dangerous to me, but this just seems crazy. I know this girl has been sailing her whole life, and I approve of kids trying to master difficult skills and overcome challenging circumstances, but, given the level of danger involved, and the fact that there is no way to anticipate the effect this will have on her emotionally and psychologically, I don't think I could approve of it. I can't think of any reason that anyone would have to do this - or to climb Everest - that could overcome the feeling that this is just too much for a 16 year old to handle, regardless of her technical abilities. If the offspring came to me with such a scheme, I'd hear him out and treat his idea with respect, but my reaction would be a downright No. (((Eartha)))

They showed that family in an interview on my news channel yesterday. The dad said that everything in life is dangerous. But heck something are more dangerous than others. He said she could have gotten in a car crash if she hadnet gotten on the boat.... A big differance there. if shes in a car crash others are obviously there to call the police, and to help her.... no one is a at sea with her when shes on the boat! Stupid Parents.

She was picked up by French sailors..... I predict good times for her.

I would have to question why my son or daughter would want to do something like that. What are their motives? Are they trying to prove something to themselves or to others? Are they just looking to get their name in some record book? There comes a time when a parent has to let go and allow their children to grow up and become adults, but 16 still seems an awfully young age to me. And I know I would be a nervous wreck the whole time..

i see no problem with this at all. I dont see why so many people are bothered by it. Some kids are more responsible than others. Some people aren't prepared to do something like this at 30, but some are at 16. Maybe there was a possibility of danger. But playing football is dangerous as well. And many parents allow that. We can`t, nor should we, impose our OPINIONS of whats right and wrong on other people.

Oh man, not this again. When this happened, this section would not stop asking questions about this. But here is my answer: Yes, it is dangerous. However, she has been sailing her whole life and if she has her parent's approval and she feels safe about it then it is ok for HER. We have no place in HER decisions. There is consequences though, as we have seen.

No, I wouldn't. If I wouldn't let him or her drive, I wouldn't let him or her sail around the world by his or herself.

Yeah but just think of how famous you'd be if she made it! Ka-Ching!!

It would really depend on the child. Some 16 year olds are still children while other are much more mature. I can say that I would be very unhappy about it, very unhappy but if my 16 year old had devoted most of their life to sailing ...ahhh **** it. I would discourage it. That's my ******* baby!

Scuzzy Logic

It strikes me as an incredibly stupid idea. If my son/daughter wanted to really sail around the world, they can certainly wait until they are in their 20's. They wouldn't be doing it with me funding them as a teen.
