What are the pros and cons about becoming a vegetarian?

  • I'm thinking about becoming one just to be a little bit healthier. I know everyone needs protein so i'll work on that but yeah what are the pros and cons? thanks in advance =]] [ this is a repost but I wanted the view point from people my age ]

  • Answer:

I've been a vegetarian for my whole life. I don't think you should quit meat cold turkey (ha); look at becoming a meat-reducing vegetarian and steadily stop eating meat, it's much healthier. Pros: ▪ You're not eating dead stuff; it's ethical and you're not supporting animal cruelty. ▫ You're less prone to several diseases. ▪ You'll probably live longer (I think it's 6-10 years?) ▫ Stronger immune system ▪ It's not as hard as people say to find food, most places have decent vegetarian options ▫ You'll often feel healthier, it can be easier to breathe ▪ Feeling better about yourself Cons: ▪ Lack of protein; as long as you eat Quorn you'll be fine (I hate tofu, but that too if you want). Nuts, beans and eggs are also high in protein, or you could take protein tablets (I used to have them, they taste like wood and cardboard D:) ▫ People asking if you miss meat every five minutes ▪ People generally being annoying about it I think you should do it, but one step at a time. Good luck :)

Keep in mind that a vegetarian diet isn't automatically healthy - technically, you could live on macaroni and cheese and potato chips and consider yourself a vegetarian. And veggie burgers are full of over-processed crap. Unfermented soy (found in dairy and meat analogues like soy milk and tofu which vegetarians tend to consume) is bad for you as well - the soy industry markets it as a health food, but it's full of antinutrients and toxins. Fermented soyfoods like tempeh and natto, which contain significantly lesser amounts of that stuff, are rare in the United States. Getting enough protein isn't really as big a deal as most people make it out to be - most Americans get way too much protein as it is. If you still plan to eat eggs and dairy products, you'll probably be consuming enough. Eggs are the highest quality source of protein. But nuts, beans, and seeds are also good sources of protein. Try not to resort to protein bars/shakes or anything like that - frankly, it'd be healthier to eat meat. ~Pros~ - You won't be supporting the meat industry. - Vegetarian diets can be healthy because they can include lots of fruits and vegetables. ~Cons~ - You can become deficient in certain nutrients, like vitamin B12. - It might be harder for you to find things to eat at restaurants and such. Edit: I forgot to add that, if you decide you want to continue eating meat, you can make more healthful by buying organic grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, wild-caught fish, etc.

Pros - Its WAY healthier. Theres so many health benefits, id just google it. - Its better for the environment - Youre not supporting factory farming which is terrible Cons - Well the obvious one, if you like meat you dont get to eat it anymore xD - I broke out (in acne lol) the first month i was a vegetarian because your body is 'detoxing' - You have to be careful because you can eaily become anemic After 3 months, i couldnt do it anymore. I hate that fact but I ride horses and buy leather tack, and I felt that if im using animal products i was just being a hypocrit. But maybe someday ill be able to be a full veggie again lol.

I've been a vegetarion my whole life :D There are a lot of pros such as your healthier (as long as you get protien in other sources) as one of the main ones, your weight is healthier, eating animals is not on your consious (sp i know haha) if thats something your into, and if you take care of yourself I've heard vegetarions live longer. But if you are a picky eater being a vegetarion isn't a good idea because you will run out of stuff to eat fast, and another con is that lots of people do eat meat so if your eating over at someones house it could be a problem. But I love being a vegetarion! EDIT: you don't get a sickly look, at all. That's only the people who eat next to nothing and don't take care of themselves.

Becoming a vegetarian will only help you out if you stop eating junk food as well.

Surt

pros health ethics it will push you to try new and exotic foods con its difficult to start (best to do it in steps) people will get mad at you and act defensive because you chose a better lifestyle its difficult to eat at restaurants or eat prepackaged foods you have to research foods and your diet requirements and learn to get all your vitamins or take vitamin pills If it makes you feel better, I am actually very healthy, in fact I think since my diet change I might have even gotten more attractive as I am hit on a bit more and I have gotten perfect abs since then.

My friend was a vegetarian for a few years... Pros: She lost some weight Her bowels were much more regular (sorry TMI, but just trying to be honest) She tried food she never would have tried otherwise Cons: She had to be very vigilant about taking vitamins and making sure she had enough protien in her diet Her skin started looking pale and she looked sickly Her hair started falling out She is no longer a vegetarian, but still eats very little red meat, usually on special occasions, and she eats tons of fish and veggies. Her eating habits are much better since trying vegetarianism, and she maintains a healthy weight. She looks very healthy now. Everyone will have a different reaction to a vegetarian diet, it is a very healthy lifestyle, but it is best to be very well educated about how to get proper nutrition from a vegetarian diet. There are so many options available now for vegetarians, but it doesn't work for everyone. EDIT: LMAO, McDonalds does NOT use "beef grease" to deep fry their fries, they use 100% vegetable oil... I should know, I worked there... EDIT again: My friend ate a very healthy vegetarian diet, and still ended up getting sick. Not everyone will get sick, and for the most part, most vegetarians who eat a well balanced diet are extremely healthy individuals... but for some people, not eating meat can have detrimental side effects. Again, like I said, Being a vegetarian is a VERY healthy lifestyle, but it is important to make sure that you know how to get proper nutrition from it, and for some, like my friend, even eating extremely healthy, and supplementing does not work, and they still end up not looking as healthy after a while.

Pros: Less impact on the environment. Animals being slaughtered commercially contributes to 18% of human-induced greenhouse gases globally. (http://newstandardnews.net/content/index.cfm/items/3956) And of course the obvious animal-safety animal-rights animal-mistreatment arguments. Vegetarianism/Veganism are becoming increasingly popular and "stylish" among celebs such as Emily Deschanel from "Bones". Cons: You've gotta become a cook and find out creative ways to eat out, eat at family get-togethers and eat while traveling and on the go. If you go vegan, you have to take B-vitamin shots intravenously. You might become the butt of a few jokes. You've gotta be careful about eating "convenience" vegetarian/vegan foods such as French fries which are not healthy.
