What makes a teacher good at their profession?

My 8 year old daughter's teacher wants her checked for ADD?

  • Teacher says my 8 year old is easily distracted, up out of her seat sharpening pencils and wanting to go and fill up her water bottle, also watching the other students in class. She moved my daughter off by her desk so that she can concentrate on her work more (she is the last one getting her work done because of the above mentioned,). She also SOMETIMES makes silly mistakes on her papers, misses things she knows already. She is only 8 though, you know? My husband & I filled out paperwork, as well as the teacher, to be turned into her doctor. We plan on meeting with him in a month, right before school starts back up. Someone I know in the medical profession thinks that often teachers are just quick to label ADD, and I somewhat agree, but then again, teachers should know, they see this behavior all of the time. I am NOT one of those parents who will just pass this off & not deal with it, but do you think the teachers thoughts are warrented or is she just a curious child?

  • Answer:

I would go through with the doctors appointment, but make absolutely sure that the doctor is entirely thorough. Also, it really wouldn't be a bad idea to schedule her to see another physician as well just to get a second opinion. I know those appointments are hard to get, so you might consider this before you see her doctor and make the appointment in advance. It is true that teachers and doctors quick label children, and ADD medications are prescribed way too frequently, but it is also true that some children really need it. If you do decide to put your child on some sort of medication, take very careful notes of her behavior, personality, sleeping and eating habits, and temper prior to being placed on medication and even more careful notes after she is placed on the medication. Good luck!

If she had ADD I think it would have shown up before 8 yrs old. Does she sit and watch movies? The whole movie I mean, this is a task that is very hard for ADD kids, at least all the ones I have dealt with. I am an EA and you can pretty much tell in kindergarten the kids with ADD, so if it is coming up now I would say it is more a case of boredom than anything. And every kid makes silly mistakes, heck every adult does as well. Go ahead and do the testing but my guess is she is not. Next year she may have a more inspiring teacher and have no problems at all. I also believe people are too quick to label ADD. My cousin always says half of these kids have NBD, never been disciplined LOL I in no way meant the NBD about your daughter she sounds like a typical 8 yr old to me. I have 7 & 9 yr old daughters. My youngest is very easily distracted but is in the top percentage of her class so I figure it is just her age or the way she is.

Hmmmm.... most states I have lived in, the teacher would lose her license for that! Tell the teacher she has severe ADD and that you decided not to treat her with medication..... that would be an interesting predicament for that teacher.... Truly, any child can be diagnosed with ADD if you want them to be. I took the test and found out that I was ADD too. So is my wife, my son, my daughter, my dog and each of my cats. The test is subjective and therefore anyone can be diagnosed with ADD. If YOU believe your daughter has a problem, then work on getting it corrected. If your teacher believes that your daughter has a problem.... get a new teacher.

Talk to your daughter about it. Ask her about why she does these things. Don't challenge her, just talk conversationally, maybe about how you were at her age. See if she feels that she has a problem. How is your daughter at home or in other environments?

Teachers are quick to diagnose (without medical training) ADD and the like. I would NOT get the testing done. That diagnosis labels your daughter as special needs and will bring more money to the school, and your daughter will be in a drug induced state where she will perform like a nice little robot for the teacher. The truth is, 8 year olds are not MEANT to sit in a chair for hours a day. Their natural attention span is something of about 8 minutes. She is just behaving in a normal way. Now, some adaptions need to be made but it need not be a diagnosis of ADD and a prescription for mind altering drugs (which is what they are). A lot of children that are diagnosed with ADD are actually exceptionally bright and their behavior stems from boredom. They finish their work ahead of time and have nothing to do, and like children do they start getting fidgety. Try sending books that interest her or something quiet to occupy her time if she finishes before her classmates if that is the case. You should not pass it off, definitely not, because there is a SLIM chance that she does have ADD. It is more likely, however, that she is just a typical child that is not adjusting well to the unnatural expectations being put on her. I wish you the best, and your daughter especially!

i had the same problem your daughter has but one of my teachers spoke up when i was in the First grade sometimes it takes longer for the signs to show so she may have ADD to me as someone that has been diagnosed with ADD i've learned a few things that you can try that might help your daughter stay focused during the time she isnt focusing if its reading a text book outlineing the chapter keeps your hands busy and less likely to want to stare off into space little things like that help alot but like someone else has already said you know your daughter better than that teacher does

Although you will need to be ultimate authority and decision maker in regard to how this handled, you should definitely go through with the testing for two reasons. First, you told the school that you would and second, you want the teachers to feel that you are cooperating with them in trying to find a solution to the problem. (As someone else pointed out, you have to be careful of labels for your daughter. However, you also have to be careful of being labeled a "problem parent" by the school administration.) Let the professionals make the diagnosis and recommend the best plan of action and then you determine to what extent it should be implemented.

If your child is continuesly disrupting the class they yes the teacher's complaints ARE warranted. There are more children in that classroom than just your child and being curious doesn't mean she should be allowed to disrupt the classroom. I would have my child tested then if she isn't ADHD I would have a talk with her about focusing or if you don't think the treatment she is getting is fair then homeschool her because it's not fair to the rest of the class to allow HER to disrupt THEIR learning.

You don't think she has ADD though do you. That's why you're here, to see what we think. You know her better then anyone. Is she a smart kid? get her a formal IQ test. She might be too clever for her class.

I really think she has it because the teacher can tell she is more distracted then other 8 year olds.
