What cell phone should I get?

What age to get a kid a cell phone, if you don't have a home phone.?

  • My husband wants to get our 5 year old a cell phone for her 6th birthday. She's just starting to want to call her friends on the phone. My husband and I got rid of our home phone when our daughter was a baby and have had cell phones only since then, so there's no home phone for her to use. She has to borrow one of our cell phones to use. I understand the reasoning, but part of me thinks it's nuts to get a cell phone for a kid this young. What do you think?

    Since you do not have a home phone having her own phone may be the best way to go. But I suggest you get her one of the fire fly phones. get her one of those go phones from cingular, or one with a calling card that she can only use at home... never let her take it to school because most likely it will get stolen or lost

maybe try one of the criket phones that are made just for kids and make it a home phone I'd say 6 is too young...but if you can get her understand that it wont be free to keep...have her do chores to "pay" for the bill, hen it should be ok and it's never too young to start teaching yourkids the value of a dollar

Way too young. What could they possibly talk about that they cant talk about on a play date or at school. I think some teenagers are too young for cell phones but that is just me

um, a six year old typically doesnt call their friends enough to need there own phone. let her use your phone. i think it is nuts to give a first grader a cell phone. its just crazy. i wouldnt get my kid a cell phone until they started to drive. what on earth would they need it for. i survived 17 years without a cell phone. why is it that kids cant survive without one now. its strange.

I have a 5 year old an 8 year old and an 11 year old, none of them have cell phones.

We're looking into one for our 6 year old, who we drop off at tumbling. Our reasoning is, what if there's an emergency and they can't call everyone at once? Like a fire? I think if she's responsible and only you know that, I'd do it.

How much do a 5yr old talk on the phone to where they need their own phone? Not Enough Where do she go that you don't go to where she need a phone? No Where So why do a 5yr old need a cell phone?

It is nuts. What at 5 do they have to talk about on a phone? "oh you made a nice picture today" or "I like your dress". It is too stinkin young for them to need cell phones to act like little teenagers. Besides at 5 is she going to comprehend time limits, minutes, etc..? Probably not. Not to mention it could get lost and will be nothing more than an expensive "toy" for her. It's not like she is learning to drive and would need one in case she's running late or had a problem while out and had to call for help or to let you know where she is. That would be a different story. Any kid before that then it's just ridiculous and unnecessary.
