Where do your school-aged kids go in the Summer when you work?

What do your kids do in the Summer (from 8am - 5:30pm) when you work? Are there any other options besides daycare???

Answer:
Yep, this is a challenge with kids when summer comes along. I work from home full time, so the challenge for me isn't childcare, but finding enough hours to focus on the job. It's gotten easier with a slightly older kid (10) - plays independently, flits between my house and her friend's house down the street all summer. Other options to look into: 1. summer day camps. In my area the full day camps run 150-300 per week. Summer camps are offered by the YMCA, Boys and Girls clubs, local parks and recreation departments, children's museums, sporting organizations etc. Parents who count on these kinds of arrangements for summer care start booking in the weeks as soon as the camps advertise their summer offerings - in February or even sooner. 2. teenager - find a local teen to watch them full time in the summer. If you can find a friend or two to split the babysitting time with this can be similar in cost to summer camps with a bit more freedom. 3. family - rely on local relatives to child watch for the summer. 4. adjust working hours. Two parent families can sometimes shift their hours so there is less time needed to find someone else to watch your kids. 5. I saw an interesting option in Family Fun magazine a few years back - get 5 families to go in together on an informal "summer camp". Each family takes 2 weeks (use your vacation time for this) watching all of the others kids and plans activities to be done.

I wont need to work this summer since Im on maternity leave, usually me and my husband both build up vacation time so we can have reduced hours in the summer and work our schedules so there is only one hour where we're both working, him from 7-12 and me from 11-3, in which case my 4 and 3 year old go to a friends house while my 7 and 9 year old stay home. Depending on the age of your kids, they could either stay home or at friends houses or they could go to summer camp. You could hire a teenager to come watch them, depending on how much you spend on daycare it could be cheaper, that way they can continue to do what they like, play with friends and run around the neighborhood, even if you arent there.
My husband is home so she stays home part of the time but our area also has a large number of special interest day camps that she attends. For instance, this year she'll probably do the Iron Chef and Project Runway camps. They run around the $130 mark for the week and the kids go from 7:30am to 6pm and while the camps have themes, they do swim and do some very active things.

Combination: My mom watches them on Mondays, we live in Huntington she lives a few miles away in Fountain Valley. My brother lives down the street from me and is off on two days during the week so he watches them on those days. And thursdays are neighbor who I knew since he was young watches them. However, that might change because he has my son using slang words that I have no idea what they mean lol.
