Question for parents of kids who read Harry Potter books.?

  • I and my kids(9.5 and 5) are avid readers, but have so far not started on the Harry Potter books. we have a Scholastic book order from school that has the Harry Potter books (1-7) hardcover in a boxed set for $95. It looks like a good price, and I don't have to pay shipping or go to a local store to buy it. If your kids (under 10 yrs) have read these books, can you help me: 1. Is this a good price ($95 for 7 hardcover books) 2. Will these books still be liked by kids in 3-4 yrs (when my younger one is older) 3. Should I take a chance and buy the boxed set, or try 1 book first with my 9.5 yr old. 4. Is reading Harry Potter like a rite of passage, I mean, if a 5th grader has no idea of these books, is it very odd? 5. how old was your kid when he/she started reading Harry Potter? I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy this boxed set, without having read the books myself, and hence the hodge-podge of questions above. The book order is due tomorrow and I have to decide now whether to order the boxed set or not.

  • Answer:

    1. Before buying the books, check to see if your library has them. If so, you can read them for free. If your library has book sales, you can pick them up for a couple of bucks per volume. 2. Depends on the kids. My child read a couple when she was 11 and didn't much care for them. 3. I would try one book - from the library - first. 4. There is no reason to force feed kids specific books so they won't seem "odd." If their classmates want to tease them, they will find a reason. If they don't want to tease them, it won't matter what they do or don't read. 5. Eleven. She decided they were not well-written and found quite a number of concepts the author stole from other books. I would never order a book that I could get from the library. All the best.

put it this way, most Harry Potter fans have been fans for years. For example I started in 5th grade, now I'm a sophomore in college and still love it. get it, you're kids will love it.

We have read them over and over and my daughter took her set off to college with her!

1. yes it is!!! 2. i do believe so. most kids' parents introduced them when the first came out and have been avidly awaiting each book since then. now of course she isn't coming out with more books but i still think the books are popular especially because of the movies. i know my friend had seen all the movies and then came to me and said "can i borrow your harry potter book??" that was three weeks ago and now she's finishing the 4th :) they're quite good 3. i think you should buy the whole set and start reading them to him/her or maybe they want to read it themselves. even if they don' like it you can read them and keep them. if you wish to sell them you could get more than $95 for a mint-condition hardcover box set, trust me :) 4. it kind of is. if you went up to a group of kids in the 6th grade or so and said who was harry potter's friend?? 99% would say ronald weasley or hermione granger. most kids these days have seen or read about harry potter. most kids enjoy it :) 5. my mom started reading them to me when i was in the first grade. i read most the second book by myself after she went to bed, and by third grade i read the entire thing myself. i know i'm not a parent but i hope i helped you :) best wishes

1. YES, this is a VERY good price for it--that's an average of about $13.50 per book. In the store they are very expensive--the suggested price of Book 7 was $34.99 in the stores near me. 2. Of course--the first book came out 11 years ago, and kids and adults love the stories. 3. Go ahead and buy it. If your 9 year old doesn't like it, she may in a few years (as will your youngest), or even if they don't, you probably will. 4. It's not necessarily a rite of passage, but they are good books. Most people who have access to the books have read them. 5. I started reading it in 1997 when the first book came out. I was 6...I needed some help with big words, but I got it fine and loved it.

I think that's a good price. I read the first Harry Potter book when I was in third grade( 8 years old) and loved it. It's like one of those things that is always there. Also, read the books before seeing the movies. The movies leave a lot out. Your kids will enjoy them, especially if they are avid readers. good luck

Get the set. I started reading Harry Potter when I was about 8.(and I'm 13 now..still like them, just not addicted.) I've read each of them at least twice(well, 3 times if you don't count book 3, because that's the only one I don't have, and some I've read 4 times) On second thought, maybe you could rent the movies and see if they like the storyline first. The movies are kind of different, but for the most part follow the story. Renting movies won't cost very much and if you don't like them, you can just return them, right? And depending on where you live, it might be odd for them not to have heard of it(well, not your 5 yr old) So, in short: 1.Yes. 2.Probably. 3.Boxed Set or rent the movies. 4.It kind of is a rite of passage, now that you bring it up. 5.Well, I'm way too young to have kids XD, but I was 8.

Since I was a super reader, I read them when I was 7. $95 for 7 hardcovers is a GREAT price. They usually sell for $20 each at the store. They will be liked in 3-4 years, im sure.

As others have said, it's a great price. If you can afford it, I would take the chance that they will like them, and buy the books. You could read the first one aloud to them, to get them interested, and your oldest will probably go from there. Read aloud at bed time is one of my kids' favorite things, and I credit it with their love of reading. I wouldn't worry about the rite of passage or social aspect. Many kids have never read the books, but only seen the movies. I think my oldest about 10 when he first started reading them.

1/3. It's ertainly a good price for hardcover books. I doubt the offer is going to go away, though. Maybe get the first book from the library and see how your kids like it before ordering them. We get most books from the library except for things that will be read and re-read by the same kid and by younger siblings (and even then, we go for paperback). We did end up buying the Harry Potter books after we read the first few out loud to our two oldest (8 and 6 at the time) and they loved them and wanted to re-read them to themselves. My 9 year old has read some of the books three times. 2/3/4. I expect the books will be popular for a long time to come. Most kids really love them. My kids adore them. Yes, references to them will likely come up and your kids might be a little lost if they haven't either read the books or seen the movies. That doesn't mean that every kid will love them, or that they should have to, or that they're odd if they didn't. Do your kids like fantasy generally? If not, I'd try the library route first.
