Does your middle schooler have a cell phone?

  • why do middle schoolers need cell phones. i can understand older teens who drive and may need one for emergencies but i just cant stand every time i go to a grocery store ever single 9-14 yr old had a cell phone stuck to their ear. recent studies say that cell phone may kill us. hope you are proud that you got your little darling that cell phone for christmas.

i'm a middle schooler and i use my cell phone all the time if i miss my bus and no one is around, or if i need a ride, or whatever. it really comes in handy, and i highly doubt that everyone who uses cell phones will die. thats kind of insane.

I am proud that I bought my little darling a cell phone for is birthday. As his circle of friends started to extend beyond the immediate neighborhood I felt way more secure with him having the phone. You sarcasm really isn't necessary.

The rule in my house is~ if you have a job you can have the toy. No child of mine will ever have a cell phone. It is totally ridiculous how parents are caving into these children, and trying to cover it with the excuse that the kids need it to check in with the parents. Last time I looked, I knew where my kids were, because that is MY JOB!! I do not allow my kids to roam free and check in with me whenever it suits them. If they have a place to go, then I make sure they get there, and get back home. We manage quite well this way, and I really don't think my kids are too traumatized by being this 'uncool'. It really sickens me to see parents letting technology babysit their kids, so that they do not need to assume the responsibilty. It almost seems like the kids are too much bother.

I understand your probably an adult, but, all that "Respect your elders," crap isn't gonna happen right now. Your sarcasm is REALLY annoying and if you want a good answer I suggest you change that. Nobody has EVER died from a cell phone.. that's just plain stupid. And I'm in middle school. I have a cell phone. I absolutely need it. One day, I was babysitting at my sisters house. My nephew (2) woke up and CLIMBED out of his crib.. He was still tired and he decided to walk down that stairs... He fell.. He cracked his head open. I was panicking and guess what else?!?! THEY DIDN'T HAVE A HOUSE PHONE!! They just moved in and they didn't have one. Cell phones ARE AWESOME in those kinds of situations.

My 11 y/o grand daughter has one, yes. Her dad lives in Colorado and we live in Florida. When she wet to visit him for two weeks this summer she got the phone. Its cheap and added onto our plan but knowing we could contact her at all times was worth its weight in gold. Her dad is not so great about calling as needed and this made things lots less stressful. She doesn't really use it at home though. If she has a sleep over she carries it or if she is out playing she puts it in her pocket. They aren't allowed at school so she doesn't carry it there. We are checking to see if it can stay in her backpack on days she has sports games to make it easier for us to keep in touch. They change the schedules almost every game. If she had not gone to visit her dad i can honestly say she probably wouldn't have a phone now. We are thinking of turning off our home phones since we all have a cell to see if it saves money. If so i guess she will need it. I looked at your link above. There is much controversy about cell phones and brain tumors. A friend of mine brought a law suit for this very thing a few years ago and lost. He was a neurologist himself and got a tumor directly over the spot where he held his phone. He truly believed the phone was at least partly to blame. My husband has the same type brain tumor and never used a cell. We may never know. I would be afraid of using those blue tooth things, they are a lot closer than a hand held phone.

I am going to ignore the comment about killing my kids by letting them use a cell phone. I added an extra phone to our plan this past spring. My son is an 8th grader and my oldest daughter is in 5th. My son plays football and goes places with friends. My daughter plays softball, is in orchestra, and in choir and also goes places with friends. Add to this mix, I have 2 other younger kids and their activities. My older 2 kids "share" the phone. They only take it to school, if they have an after school activity that they will need me to come get them from. So yes they have a phone, but neither of them is sole owner and can claim it as their own.
