What to do on a rainy day?

What to do with a 5 year-old girl on a rainy day (besides seeing a movie)?

  • I am babysitting tomorrow and it's supposed to be cold and rainy. I live on the beach, but my plans of taking her to the boardwalk are no longer! Any ideas for fun, rainy-day outings for kids? I live in Ocean County, NJ, if it helps. Thanks!

You might stop by a hobby/crafts store and get a bunch of large wooden or plastic beads in different shapes, sizes, and colors, plus some bead-stringing cord. A clerk can help you find the right kind. Little girls love presents, making things, dressing up, and showing off what they've made. Whatever you do, plan a variety of things as 5 year-olds bore easily. Make sure they don't take too long or require too much dexterity or she will become frustrated. Above all, follow her lead. She may already have something in mind for you!

bowling or rollerskating indoors could be fun!

Play a board game with her. Something like Candyland or a game like Hungry Hungry Hippo. Or you could make arts and crafts with her, like you could help her make something to give her mom when she comes back.

What we used to do on rainy days was get some colored chalk and make chalk drawings in the driveway then we would watch as the rain made all the colors run and fade into one another creating "rainbows". You can "dress up" and have "high tea". Stop at the library and pick up some of the books you liked when you were her age.

How about a spa day inside....makeovers, do each others hair and make up...pedicures and manicures..Take lots of pictures..have a tea party with all her dolls and animals. Go to the craft store and pick up some craft things...Fathers day is coming..maybe she could make something for daddy and grandpas.

You could have an cute indoor picnic, or you could color in coloring books. If you don't have coloring books, print out some pages off the internet. You could also get rain boots on, some hats, mittens, and a jacket and go splash in puddles. Then when you get back in have some hot chocolate and nice hot soup. You could throw a dance party too! Take a few of her stuffed animals and have them as guests, make little bowls of Chips, Chex Mix, etc. for you guys to have as snacks, and put on your favorite music and dance around and act all silly. Then go on a clean up mission. Tell her that whoever cleans up most of their own stuff gets a prize! Then while you're cleaning say, "Hurry hurry hurry! I think I'm gonna win!" But let her win, and give her $0.50 and a certificate from the site below. I hope you have a fun day!

I'd stay inside and put on some music, then I'd play dress up, and do some art projects. This way you don't have to go outside and you'll still have fun. You could also bring out her books and read to her.

I love playing with my 7 year old in the rain but when we cant we usually build stuff with lego. Or get some old cardboard boxes and let him cut up the boxes and use tape to build stuff. Then we color it with crayons.

Play some Go fish or make a craft. Such as: a picture frame made out of foam. Or a collage for her mom that represents her love for her. Good Luck
