What Is Homework?

What is it with homework??????????????

  • Yes I think that is good for a child to have some homework,or like atleast 1 assignment from each teacher! My daughter is in 5th grade, and she came home with 8 pages of homework to do ! It was all different stuff! I mean they had like 15-20 questions on each page! I am always firm with her about doing her homework b-4 she does anything else, but I think that was a bit much. With her having to bathe and eat dinner and chores, and homework.....she was actually a little late getting to bed that night! The last few days, it has been only like 3 pages of work....now that is more like it! Just wanted to get your opinion about the homework issue!

I'm sorry to say it, but suck it up. I mean, 8 pages of homework in any grade under 7th is rare. I doubt this will happen too many more times, but that's how life goes. Teachers don't converse with each other and decide what to give in each class. The teachers do know that the children get other homework, but that's really not their problem. I'm a high school sophomore, I know. There are people in my classes who complain about getting homework in other classes to my teachers and they always say, "Well, that's not my subject, my class, or my problem." You and your daughter both know that the older she gets, the more challenges she is going to be faced with, and that includes more homework. Instead of whining about the one day of excessive amounts of homework, start helping her. Don't do it for her, but do it with her. She'll get it done faster and it'll be more understandable to her. Good Luck.

I agree with you totally. When I was a kid, we didn't have that much homework. It took me a total of 30mins. to do it in most cases. I don't think it is good for the children to have hours of homework every night. Which it what it usually is at my house with my 5th grader. He could probably do it a little quicker, but it is still much more than needed in my opinion. When your children don't get home until 4:00 it is kind of hard to fit homework in with dinner, bathtime, and chores all before bedtime.

you know i can see like 30 minutes of homework for review. But i know what you mean when they have loads. My daughter is in 4th grade and has 1 hour of math homework every night. Not to mention spelling, reading and the other subjects.I m like damn they are there for 7 hours why have an hour of homework?

Early on, we were told to expect 10-15 minutes of homework per grade per night, + 20 minutes of reading, and it's pretty much followed that - 30 minutes for 1st grade, 40 for 2nd, 50 for 3rd....(if you factor in book reports) So by 5th grade, I would expect 50-75 minutes of homework....at 10 minutes a page your daughter's assignment was on the high end, but not unreasonable.

My daughter is in the 2nd grade and I feel that the school does not send enough home, so I make extra for her to do. You have to keep in mind that by the time these kids go to college an BA will mean no more than a high school diploma, hell today an AA is worthless it is not worth more than a high school diploma! People need a BA today to even get a good job, by the time our kids go to college it will be a MA or nothing! My daughter is already working on pre-algebra! That is from the school! She came home with math home work the other night that I thought to myself "I did not learn this until 6th grade" (3-1)+(5+6)+4+3 for example and I know some adults who can't even do that math WTF? Today school is less about fun times at an early age and more about mechanics with is more than fine by me, if she can do better than me I am all for it!

I think you may need to talk with her teacher and ask is there a particular reason why she has so much homework. They normally send things home that they have gone over in class and the homework is just to reinforce what they are learning. I think sometimes teachers tend to forget they arent the childs only teacher when sending home work. I too have been in that situation with my kids.

I wonder if your daughter was unclear about what the expectations for the work were. Could all that work possibly have a later due date (like Friday)? Could some of the work have been class work that she didn't finish? That could be the problem, or both teachers could have just assigned a lot of work that day. Sometimes we (teachers) don't realize how much work other teachers assign when assigning our own work. If this was a one-time deal, I wouldn't sweat it. If it becomes a recurring problem, talk with her teachers about it. Eight pages with 20 questions on each one is extremely excessive.

Make sure that some of that work isn't left from that day that she didn't do in class first of all. Secondly email the teacher and find out why so much homework. Sounds like a bit much to me really. My son is in 4th grade and this is how it goes for us: 20 min. of reading, 10 min. of math facts (just practicing for 10min. either with flash cards, computer, or paper.) 5 math problems and study for spelling test. That's been all SO FAR. I know that 5th grade gets them ready for Middle School but still that sounds like a bit much. Talk to your child first then talk with the teachers. Final note: for it to go from 3 pages to 8 sounds a bit fishy to me.

Last year my kids were in 1st and 2nd and they had what I thought was an outrageous amount of homework for that grade level...WHAT THE HECK are they doing in school all day that they need to spend another hour or so doing work? This year thank goodness both teachers have a similar philisophy of only occasionally assigning homework and usually if they need a little extra work on a task or didn't get to finish it in class, that lets me know they are doing something worthwhile with their time at school. Perhaps it is time to complain to the school????
