How much is a spanish tutor?

How much to pay the tutor, she cleans too, awkward?

  • Okay, I got a tutor from the local college to help my 8 year old girl and 9 year old boy with homework, about 2 and half hours a day, 3 days a week. The tutor is really lovely and the kids like her and I have seen a little bit of improvement in their behavior and school work. They are very hyperactive and I am really worried about them falling behind, so I try to get them as much extra help as possible. She is alone with the kids while I run errands for work. For the last week or so, she has been washing the dishes every time she is there, and has even cleaned up the living room and vacuumed, she says she doesnt mind and she likes to do something while the kids are doing the problems she assigns . I think she thinks we are pigs because the house is always pretty messy. I love that she is cleaning but I feel very awkward about it...should I pay her more? I do no think I am paying her enough to start with, I just had never had a tutor and she only tutored through a company that paid her a very high wage. I am not going to say how much I pay her, but what do you think is appropriate, for 2 kids per hour? Thanks so much!

  • Answer:

Yes I think you should pay her more. She sounds like she is a great person. Pay her what you can.. I am not sure. She is going out of her way to impress you though.

The average tutor goes for about $10-15 an hour but Ive seen professional tutors go as high as $20 an hour per child, I would pay her a little more for the housework, like a $5 an hour increase from whatever you pay her now. Personally, I wouldnt really feel comfortable with her cleaning, since thats not really her job or responsibility, but thats between you and her.

I would pay her $10/hour to tutor 2 kids. I would not pay her extra to clean your house. She is there to tutor, however, if the kids are busy doing their work & do not need her help at the moment, if she wants to clean to give her something to do, than let her. Do not take offense to it! I'm a busy body, so when I was in high school and would baby sit, I would always do extra cleaning around the house. It was not because I thought they were messy or the house was pig sty, it was because I needed something ambitious to do to pass the time - I got bored watching tv while the kids napped or played happily on their own, so cleaning was the only other thing to do. I did not expect to get paid more for doing it because I was just doing it on my own for something to do. To ease your awkwardness you can say, thank you for cleaning but your really don't have to, I only expect you to tutor, and I can not afford to pay you extra to clean as well. Then the ball is in her court...if she continues to clean, than leave it be, if she stops, than that's fine to. My 8 year old son had a tutor, we paid his tutor $5 per hour. And my 3 year old goes to a preschool that ends up being $6 per hour per child (if you break it down). So I think $10 for your two kids is fair...at least it would be for the area I live in.

I think a slight (5%) increase would be nice of you, or a bonus on a holiday etc. If shes in college and your kids are elementary school i would think either 20-25$ per kid per hour. I feel like she probably comes from a family where cleaning is second nature, and is not trying to insult you at all but rather it is just second nature to her to help out in any way she can. As long as your kids like her teaching, i wouldnt worry about anything.
