How to add fragment activity to activity?

Another "Is my kid ADD" question?

  • OK. My 8 year old son has exhibited signs that he has trouble focusing on activities that are are not high intensity (like video games). I read the online symptom pages and he would fit about half of the ADD checklist: messy handwriting cluttered desk at school easily distracted by surrounding noises or activity (ex: see's other kids start doing a new project in class and will top what he's doing to join them) will ask questions about something totally unrelated to task at hand forgets to clean table, put clothes away, etc some things he doesn't fit: 1) he's not hyperactive (bouncing off the walls) 2) pretty coachable 3) memorizes stuff pretty well. 4) loves to read (not sure if this is a non-ADD characteristic or not but he can read for 1/2-1hr straight). He's real skillful and picking up new skills really fast. Just doesn't have patience to remember little details. He's doesn't watch a lot of TV (maybe 1 hr on weekend max) or play a lot of video games (1-1.5 hrs on weekend, none during weekdays). We also made sure his extra-curr activity schedule is managable. Currently he only does soccer and piano but both are pretty intensive (he's in competition soccer and plays a high level of piano). Went to doctor who scheduled him to take an ADD test this week (basically play with other kids while experts watch). His teacher doesn't think he's ADD (she has a ADHD son herself) but did tell us about his inattentive nature in class. So....does he sound like a typical boy who just needs prodding to pay attention or may have ADD?

  • Answer:

It sounds to me like he's a normal kid. Most kids have a narrowed attention span, but his doesn't sounds severe enough to be ADD. Go ahead with the ADD test though, because he might be developing it and he's just worked really hard to function in spite of it. Good luck, let me know how things turn out!

One time I read about a girl who they thought had ADD or ADHD and they gave her meds without even testing her but she actually had a gift.

I heard a dr. on tv say that kids under the age of 10 can not be properly diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. It is very normal for a kid to have messy hand writing. Same with cluttered desk or room. Most people are distracted by other noises. People are always thinking so it is normal to ask questions about things that are not going on. Adults for get to clean up too. Sounds like a very normal kid to me. Dr. Phil said that just about 70% of all kids labeled as ADD or ADHD are normal.

change his diet -no caffeine or processed foods. get rid of the TV, have him play outside more often during the day, do a yoga class together, install black out blinds in his room & give him a sound soother to ensure a better rest at night. meet with his teacher, the school psychologist, and principal to discuss the issue. work with an occupational therapist to modify his behaviors & see the pediatrician.
