What age should a kid get a cell phone?
-
When my eldest son was 10, I got him a cell phone because he started walking short distances in NYC (safe neighborhood) by himself, and I was happy with my decision because that's the time when the other kids in his grade started to get phones so the other moms agreed with me. My second oldest son started walking around our neighborhood for short distances at age nine, because I thought he was mature enough. So I got him a phone at age 9. But some of the other moms in the grade didn't agree with a child at age nine having a cell phone. I guess it depends what moms are in the grade. I let my son keep it anyway, but I'm wondering, what age do you think is good to get a cell phone?

Answer:
Kids send lots of nasty text messages with their cell phone. And you won't know when they start texting because they can just delete the messages. My parents got me a cell phone at 9 years old and that is when they started to lose me. I would wait until they are at least 12 and responsible enough to not stay up all night texting beneath the covers.

My mother didn't allow me to get a cell phone until I was 16 & able to pay my own cell phone bill. Definitely taught me a little responsibility at a young age.

I got a cellphone at 14, but i would suggest getting a cellphone for your kids when you start middle school and if they lose it make them pay for another one

a pre-programmed phone for parents and emergencies only at age 7, and a real one for friends at age 12

Depends on the child and the circumstances.. My youngest child has had a cell phone since age 8.. We live on a farm so she has free run of a really large area, the cell phone allows me to call her home without having to go look for her... We tried two-way radios first but with the topography of the area reception was spotty at best..
