My child is going to be tested(?) for autism. what's next?

  • My daughter is going to a neurologist to start being evaluated for autism. I have no idea what I'm in for. I've researched it but I don't know how long the process will take. I found that profession help will help her to with her disability if she has one but what kind of professional help and from who? I read that there is something called Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention what is that? is that what we are already doing with her OT and her early child education center (school for young children with special needs), or is it something else? what comes after a diagnoses? how can I help her or can I at all? do I help her to get better or just to cope with the issues that she will have in the future? I'm so confused. I feel helpless. I have no idea what to do.

Sorry i think from what you say your in the USA ? here in the UK we have a child development center Thomas was diagnosed with severe autism when he was three, we had a 6 week assessment where a few doctors monitored him in a room doing various things like playing, interacting with peers, within a few weeks we were already told he was autistic, Thomas also has a statement of special needs he also attends a special school, he's 11 now still unable to talk and still in nappies/diapers, its been tough Hun i wont lie but you will adapt to her needs so much goes through your head and you can drive yourself mad with worry, don't think you can cure her she isn't ill you can help things along by getting the right help as soon as you can

I doubt that the neurologist will leave you in the dark. Surely the Neurologist will tell you what you can/should do after your daughter has been diagnosed. I think you are certainly on the right course, you have obviously done the right thing in taking her to a neurologist, and if I were you, I would ask the neurologist or someone in the medical field these questions. :) If the neurologist does not have the answers, my guess is that he/she will know someone who does.
