Am I over reacting about keeping my children home from school cause of the H1N1??
-
I just found out yesterday that a boy in my sons class has a confirmed case of the H1N1 and I kept my kids home from school today cause I am so scared. This child also lives in the same apartment complex as my children and they play together a lot. I don't think I am over reacting but people have told me I am . I have a son who has really bad asthma and a 6 month old baby girl who has been sick since birth that I am so scared for them to get infected with this virus. I have done everything to protect my children at home with soap and hand sanitizers and what not but at school I feel that there unsafe. Do you think I am going about this like a crazy lady LOL.

Answer:
I have 3 kids ages 3,4,6. I home school my kids so I haven't had to stress as much. I would have done the same thing. My sister is just recovering from H1N1. She had to stay overnight in the hospital. She said that it was the worst flu she has ever had and says she would recommend people getting the vaccine instead of taking your chance on getting it. Your kids already have health issues. Your son has asthma. H1N1 is a respiratory illness. If they get this, yes they might be just fine. But being that they already have health issues, they might not be fine. What do you think H1N1 would do for your sons breathing? Don't let anyone make you feel like you did the wrong thing. You are their Mother. It is your job to protect them and keep them safe. Maybe you can home school for a while. Also, they are your kids and it is up to you if you want to take them out. Since when did the school have more rights then you. Your son is not going to get stupid if you take him out for while. Illegal my a$$.

First thing, you probably know that keeping your children at home when they themselves are not sick is illegal. Did you contact your local health board and discuss it with them?

Yes you are. Being too over protective is also a hazard.
Have your children vaccinated against H1N1 and put your mind at ease.

Yes. Over reaction. Kids get sick. They get better. They strengthen their immune system (a remarkable thing) in the process. Frequent hand washing, and not sharing food and drinks is the best preventative. Unless, of course you want to put your kids and yourself in a big plastic bubble. Because, during the course of your day you may go to the store. You go to the bank. You get mail. You drive your car. You walk down the street. You use the bathroom. You use the ATM. All of these activities (and a million more) introduce infectious agents into your environment on an ongoing basis. You bring them home to your kids every day. You don't get sick. Why? People are built to be rather durable. Less fear. More knowledge. Less emotion. More logic. All will be well.

I think you are over reacting. If your son played with the boy who has the flu the day before he got sick then he has already been exposed to it. If he has asthma then you really should get him the flu vaccine since that is a high risk group. Just keep up with the hand washing and sanitizer. You can't keep your kids in a bubble. At my kids school they wipe down all the desk, etc with sanitizer between each class. If you do decide not to send them to school, then you also need to keep them at home and not let them go to any public places.

The way I see it is ultimately it's is my responsibility to keep my children healthy and safe. So it's my call. What are they going to do - haul me off to jail for protecting my children? I think you did the right thing. Watch closely, h1n1 comes on quickly. My daughter had it, it wasn't that bad but she is generally healthy and does not have asthma. It's all good. I think you are doing as you see fit as a parent.

if the child has just come down with the virus they were contagious two weeks before symptoms showed up there fore what you are doing is redundant if he will get then he is going to get it

Yes, most people overreact about these diseases because the media blows them up. West Nile Virus was last years insanely deadly virus blown up by the media and h1n1 is this years. The truth be said that most people survive the virus and simply go through some discomfort like anyone would when they are sick. Also, if you are still concerned you can probably get your children the vaccine which may now become a 2 dose vaccine.
