Speech delay and more...autism?Homeschool?

Is there something wrong with my son? He will be 5 in a few days. He was always a little unusual ...hard to explain how. He has some speech delay but not too much.I think ihe test came that he was like a 4 yr old in speech. He went to school for speech but it didn't help him at all. The special needs pre-K didn't help him either and every morning he was trembling and crying and said he wants to stay home. I asked why ? "Scared" Why "The teacher will cough"... He was tested and came with a normal IQ, slightly above average. He jsut started to read short simple words and can count to 30...knows basic pre-K stuff . At church he doesn't play or talk with any child , but likes to watch them... If I tell him not to do anyhting, he comes and hits me or pushes me... Since he had a lot of anxiety when he was going to school, I kept him home and I homerschool him. Should I continue? He is doing great academically and has a 6 yr old brother and a 3 yr old sister to socialize in addition to church activities , karate and park days... Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Your son is autistic, and obsessive-compulsive. You have a hard row to hoe. I have a son just like him who is now 14. I sent him to school and it was a nightmare. IEP's are a joke. That is the school's way of appeasing both you and the government and covering thier behind legally while totally ignoring anything that is on it. They will call you every day all day to get the child and then fail to document anything that will help you. I sent my son to school for 6 years and he learned nothing that I did not teach him at home. The special ed class taught him NOTHING!!!! Did I say that clearly enough? My hair is standing up on my head just thinking about all of the phone calls, tackling, handcuffing, police calling, and court cases I have been through just because my son is OCD and doesn't want people coughing on him so he tries to get away. You will not be able to send your child to school. We are finally able to homeschool now. If we had done it from the beginning, I would be dealing with a different child now. Good luck. And just ignore the idiots who tell you the school system can do a better job. HA!

Autism? Do you think he might have Aspergers syndrome? That can only be diagnosed by a doctor and he may have some level of autism, but that can only be determined by a specialist. Personally I don't think that the behavior you've described is anything out of the ordinary for a child his age. But as his mother you know him best and if you're really concerned you should seek the advice of a professional.

I definitely wouldn't home school. Your school district will have resources that you just don't have. Ask the school for help and get him into an individualized education program.

I am so confused as too why people say Autism as soon as someone says a little speech delayed .... You say he tested fine in the tests so why do you think autism ? Thomas was diagnosed with severe autism when he was three and believe me Hun it was obvious he had no speech hated everything food was limited, he has just learnt to count and he is 11 years old. If you want to home school that's fine but if he is having trouble interaction with others this might be the reason. Thomas attends a great special school and he is doing great, if he was home schooled personally i don't think he would be doing so well but that's just my opinion

I would speak to the local elementary school and ask about an IEP (individualized education plan) for your son. This way a multidisciplinary team could discuss his behaviors/condition and develop a plan specifically for him.

If he is doing great and getting what he truly needs then stick with it. You could look in to getting him evaluated. You are having him out and public and around people. Are you doing therapy? If you feel he should be in school go for it but make sure to get him a IEP.

He seems to be "scared of school" because you over protect him ! If your child was tested, his IQ is great, what makes you think he has a problem anyways? He needs to interact with other children in a school, not home with an overprotective mother ! Give him the chance to socialize with other peers his age, not his siblings ! If he goes to a public school, speak to the Principal to evaluate him there, in order to qualify for a CTT class. (Collaborative team teaching) = two teachers in one classroom. If you home school your child, he will only grow to be socially inept !

You need to get him tested The test is not cover by most insurance and is very expense, where I live between 1,500 and 2,500 dollars. If you put him in Kindergarten, have and IEP as soon as you could and ask him to be tested, they will have to pay Home schooling you have have the cost My school district had a program for Autistic children, and they would not test until she was in Kindergarten, so I got her tested when she was in preschool. She got in the program, then they tested her at the end of year, and she got taken off PDD-NOS She is nine, tested again, and was on the PDD-NOS (a from of autism) The school is fighting this, because she was taken off before. When my child started Kindergarten, she was just beginning to say 2 and 3 word sentences. When she ended, she was looking at people and making full sentences. It was amazing, the program worked Even if she made not real progress in the special needs preschool, speech and birth to three, I think she needed them to make the progress. Even if you see not progress, does not mean there is none. Like my child, he could make huge improvements in one year Check with your school district, and see if they have a program for autistic children. Also, if your school does not have a program for him, you can have them pay to get him in a school that will help. I have friends that children ended up in a school by me. My daughter is way to high on the autism scale to go out of the district I would keep him in school, and get him tested Also check to see if they have a program for him or if he could go to a school that has one, if they do not I would not home school him, it's a lot of work You will have a lot to do with him You will need to work with him every night and on weekend Get him tested
