What is a summer share?

Can anyone share ideas to help my daughter get through the summer without "summer learning loss?"?

  • I've always bought grade-appropriate workbooks in the summer to help her keep up the knowledge, but I wanted to do more this summer. She's moving from 3rd to 4th grade and in our school district that's a big jump. Last year she was moved from 1st to 2nd grade in the middle of the year. In the 3rd grade she was still a little ahead and felt comfort with the extra edge. With the big jump in academics in the 4th grade, I want to make sure she goes in with that same edge. Any ideas to help? I've looked into summer enrichment programs...but I simply can't afford them. The average is $200 for 4 or 5 once a week classes.

    Content and expectations vary greatly from one district to another. As an elementary school teacher, my advice would be for you to speak with her fourth grade teacher. She would be the best person to advise you. It would also give her a great first impression of you and your daughter. Best wishes and God Bless.

ANYTHING TO KEEP HER LEARNING... SEE IF THE SCHOOL WILL LET YOU BORROW SOME TEXT BOOKS THAT ARE FOR THE 4TH GRADE. OR IF NOT GO TO THE LIBRARY AND READ BOOKS TOGETHER AND DISCUSS THEM. BUT ALSO REMEMBER TO LET HER HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER AFTER ALL, SHE IS STILL A KID AND SHOULDN'T MISS OUT ON THE FUN OF SUMMER. TAKE CARE!

I really like the clue-finders computer games. they have math, reading comprehension, geography and other tasks in a fun format. and they are self leveling to the child's abilities. you can get them from "the learning company".

Do a yahoo search under education and you will find plenty of websites to visit that offer reading programs FREE. But not to be outdone by a computer, take them to the library once or twice a weeek and let them use their computers for a read along cd.... ITS FREE

Have her (and you!!!) sign up for the summer reading program at your local library. It's free, and sometimes you can win prizes based on the number of books you complete when the program ends. It's fun, and you both may meet other readers and make friends there as well. At my library, you cannot read at a lower level than your grade or the book doesn't "count" in the program. It keeps people reading at their own level. I do it every year, and I'm a college graduate. Do it!

She sounds like a great candidate for homeschooling. She can work at her own pace and take breaks when she needs them, not when an arbitrary calendar says to take one. Many homeschooling families school year-round with several shorter breaks throughout. My kids are all at least one grade ahead of their peers. Some of them are of advanced intelligence and some are average, but they all have the opportunity to move faster than public schools.
