Appropriate pay for a nanny/babysitter AND tutor? How to ask parents how much they will be paying me? Hey everyone, recently got a job as a nanny/tutor. Met a very nice lady in a store after I was introduced by a mutual acquaintance. I have a tutoring service and normally charge $15 an hour for tutoring. She was interested in me tutoring her two children. Then, she asked if I also babysat/nannied. Since I've babysat before and am looking for some extra cash, I said sure. She wants me to do 30 miles of driving each day, twice a week. On Wednesdays, I will pick the children up from school at 3:00pm, take one child to her dance class, tutor the other child for an hour while we wait for dance to be over, then drive back home and wait until 8pm when the parents get home from work. On Thursdays, I will be picking the children up from school at 3:00pm, take the girl to dance, take the boy to martial arts, then pick both of them up at 4:30. Then stay over til 8pm again. More or less, I'll be working 5 hours each day, but it will sure take a toll on my gas tank. The mother and I haven't really discussed prices... but she knows I tutor for $15. How much should I ask for? What would be appropriate to charge per hour, for driving the kids around all day AND tutoring? Also, how is the best and most courteous, polite way to discuss how much she will paying me? We communicate by email... I am so worried that it would be rude for me to ask her how much I will be getting. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Answer:
It isn't rude of you to ask how much you will be paid. This is something that should be agreed upon prior to starting the job. I think the rate for the childcare is typically around $10 to $11 per hour then you should also be reimbursed for the gas you will be using. So you can either ask for an average hourly rate of say $12 and submit receipts for mileage. Do not accept anything less; if she tries to offer you less than that you may want to consider declining the babysitting aspect of the job and stick with simply the tutoring.
