For Indiana, what is there to know about Home Schooling?

Why are so many people against home schooling when they know NOTHING about it?

  • homeschool is a wonderful opportunity for both the parents and the child. I was home schooled all my life up to now (dual enrollment 11Th grade/college). home schooled kids have a lot fewer problems than most public schooled kids. we make Friends very easily, we get along with most people because we are not raised in "cliques" like most kids. in MOST cases we have BETTER social skills than public schooled kids because we get to be around a lot more types of people. my parents made sure that we got out in the community, went on field trips (home school groups, 4-H, and many other community clubs), spent time in museums, got to talk/know the directors of at least 3 museums (2 of which I still have contact with, great home work helpers), and we were exposed to "real life" every day. while public schooled kids were reading about sea turtles we were touching them and talking to a Marine biologist. while public school kids were studying the civil war we were reenacting it, you get the idea.

  • Answer:

Because we've been so brainwashed by the government and the media into thinking that public schools are the only appropriate way to learn anything. Lack of experience and no exposure to a large number of homeschoolers leave them using their imaginations and what few bad cases show up in the media to prejudge hundreds of thousands of people. Never mind ALL the instances of abuse, ignorance and nonsense in public schools every day, we're supposed to just suck that up because the state dept of ed says it's normal for development.

Americans have become experts at everything. Just ask them! They are finger-pointers and finger-waggers. Influenced by our media with no self-restraint....they spout off at every occasion. Like my Mom used to say, "That's a dead skunk in the road, Honey. Roll up your window and drive on by!" But you know there are LAZY, CRAZIES out there that do give genuine, decent homeschoolers a bad name. They are partially to blame.

My objections came from only knowing homeschoolers who were terribly insulated... they were only exposed to certain worldviews and failed miserably when faced with the real, diverse, messy world. While in college I made friends with several people like you seem to be- well rounded, intelligent, thoughtful, and homeschooled. I talked with their parents and discovered that they shared my objections to insular thinking, and poof! I now list homeschool as a possible choice for my son's education.

I think as long as you are well educated enough to give your child a wonderful education at home and you are getting them in club or sports well anything will they have interaction with other children then go for it. I have no problem with people wanting to educate their children at home as long as they are able to give them a good education.

Well, honestly, I was homeschooled and I hated it. My mom had been a teacher all her life, hated the public school system, and when she had three children of her own, it was only natural that she would want to teach them herself. She made sure we had plenty of opportunities to socialize with others, go on field trips, etc. And yet, I still chaffed and hated it. My two older sisters excelled under my mom's tutelage, but I did really rather poorly. In fact, I didn't learn how to read until I was in 2nd grade. I blame it more on my personality type than on any lack in my mother's skills. However, it makes me really reluctant to homeschool my own children. My husband wants me to, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to educate them as they should be. Of course, I'm scared of the same thing happening to them in public schools...

I can only speculate why everyone is against it. Laziness, fear of not being able to help/teach your children at home, or just thinking that it doesn't work and that children don't learn.

My dad and his wife totally think homeschool is crap, but my sister graduated early because of it and is now on her way to culinary school in europe!!! I'm so proud of her!

yeah... that sounds nice and all but i wouldnt trade going to school for home school (i cant believe what i just wrote... must be tired)..... school may be hard at times but its also fun...... and i dont mind reading instead of experiencing.... we go on field trips..... the best one was going to D.C...... and i like how we have all the different teachers...... some actually change ur life or make a subject better...... my fav teacher actually made me look forward to speech (sounds like a boring subject) but it was my fav class........ and its always fun being able to go to school sporting events..... or social events (dances and stuff like that).... school.... good times.. good times..... and i dont do drugs, i'm not racist, and i dont shoot ppl either..... if u ask me u think ppl have a wrong look on home school but u have a wrong look of public/private school...... and i love my family but sometime school is a sanctuary to be free from them for alittle while....

Your points may be true, but do you have the memories a high school student has? Did you ever get to try out for cheerleader/drill team/twirler/basketball/softball/etc. or attend the Friday night football games hollering for your friends on the field? What about homecoming? Prom? Winter balls? Fundraisers? Yearbook? I agree with you about the being raised in "cliques" that is the one thing that annoyed me the most in high school... but now that I've been out for a few years now, they still exist! It's part of our society... it's just something people deal with. Either you let that label you, or you don't... I never did... I was still able to be friends with everyone without making enemies. Even though some things annoyed me in school, I would have never traded it for anything. Too many wonderful memories, and too much fun! :)
