Studying abroad for Medicine?

Can I get French nationality after studying Medicine in France?

  • I'm currently in High School (not in France nor EU) and I was thinking about studying medicine in France and I know about the tough exam after the first year and how the system works. I'm also fluent in French and will be taking the IB (International Baccalaureate) so that's not a problem. I intend to stay in France and practice medicine there after my studies, however I'm not a French nor EU citizen (which you need to be to practice medicine there) and I heard that you can get French nationality if you reside for 5 years in France. I was wondering if the 9 or more years I'll spend there studying and in medical residency will count towards that goal and maybe I can get French citizenship at the end of my studies and be able to practice there?

  • Answer:

Sure, it won't disqualify you. It won't be an automatic in either. As a doctor, your chances will be higher. They are tightening up immigration because like us they have been too lax and it has caused them a lot of problems too. One last thing. I've spent time in France, after living in France for five years, you just might change your mind.
