Applying for British citizenship; declaring that my parents were married after birth?
-
My dad was born in England, my mum was born in Canada and I was born in Canada also. I am applying for a British Passport, however my parents were married significantly after I was born, 4 months. So I had to fill out a Domicile Questionnaire and a declaration of parents being married significantly after my birth forms as extra sauce #_# Only problem is I can not find the form the UK/British government require. It was about 1 page with maybe a paragraph or two of writing on it and it was just a simple thing to sign declaring that my parents were married significantly after I was born. It might be from the perspective of my dad; stating that he married his wife (my mum) significantly after I was born. Does anyone know where this is? Thanks in advance, I've been looking for a while and can not uncover it.

Answer:
Not sure who told you that you need this form - you don't. Until July 2006 fathers could only pass on citizenship to their legitimate children. However, as soon as your parents married, you became legitimate automatically. This means that you are treated as though you were British from birth. Proof of this is your parents' marriage certificate. The only documents you need to supply are listed here. http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/what-passport/first-time-apps/steps-first-timers#supporting Edit. There is NO time limit to legitimise your birth under UK law. You can apply for a British passport whether your parents married two months, two years or 20 years after your birth.

Claiming you citizenship through your father is not a problem. You will just need to show that your father and mother were married at the time of your birth or no more than 2 years after. So if your parents married when you were 4 months old then this is no problem as the time frame is under 2 years. You will also need to provide your father original birth certificate and your parent original marriage certificate. Copies of your Canadian birth certificate , driving licence, health card is also required. The time frame take up to 10 weeks for citizenship to be granted with a passport.
