• I'm wondering if there is any loophole for me to get Italian Dual Citizenship. Both my maternal grandparents were born in Italy and never renounced their citizenship when they came to the U.S. My mother was also born in Italy but renounced her Italian citizenship when she came to the U.S. and became a US citizen. She was born in 1945. Is there any way i can get Italian dual citizenship?

  Italian citizenship is based primarily on ancestry and not location of birth (Jus sanguinis over Jus Soli). US citizens who are descended from an ancestor (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.) born in Italy may have a claim to Italian citizenship by descent. The three basic requirements for Italian citizenship based on Jus Sanguinus are: 1) A child is born to an Italian citizen parent or a parent with the right to Italian citizenship "jure sanguinis". Henceforth this parent will be known as the Italian parent 2) If the child was born before August 16, 1992, the Italian parent must not have taken another citizenship by naturalization at the time of the child's birth. 3) If the mother is the Italian parent, the child must have been born after January 1, 1948. All the requirements above must have been met, so it seems that because of your mothers renunciation of her citizenship, it depends on your age as to whether or not you can claim Italian citizenship.
