Can i become a nypd with my permanent residence? But no u.s citizenship.?

  • I have been living in nyc since i was 6 i am now 19 going on 20 in april. I always wanted to become a part of the law enforcement community. Can i become a cop or firefighter with me being only a permanent residence or do i need to get my u.s citizenship? Btw im a dominican republic native.

  • Answer:

You do not have to be a United States citizen to take the Police Officer Exam, but you must be a United States citizen on or before the date of hire. Since naturalization takes only about 4 months, that should be plenty of time for you to get it done. http://www.nypdrecruit.com/faq

Other answers

No. If you want to become part of the law enforcement community in the country that educated you and possibly provided other support like food stamps or Medicaid, then naturalize to become a citizen.
