How To Learn English Quickly?

How come most Mexican immigrants, in California, don't learn English?

  • I live in Northern California in a town with a huge hispanic population; majority of which come from Mexico. I'm baffled by the huge percentage of which, have lived here for DECADES, and can't even carry on a conversation in English. For instance, I know some women who have lived here for about 20 years can barely speak English but meanwhile, the job that I work has a work program for south Koreans to learn American culture and these Korean citizens can carry on a decent conversation in English after their 3 month stay with our company. Is there something wrong with that? I'm Hispanic and I'm from Texas and when I moved out here, it was a total shock about this. So why can't these hispanic people just learn English? If I was to live in Mexico, I'd have to learn Spanish. If I was to live in Russia, I'd have to learn Russian. If I was to live in a county in Africa, I'd probably have to learn what ever that language is. So why can't these hispanic people do the same???? PS... I'm not racist because I am Mexican myself who has served in the military as well.

  • Answer:

They dont in south Texas either. The ones here legally do, though and are cool. But the others dont. I have a lot of hispanic friends here that hate the illegals and tell me how racist they are.

It's unacceptable that they don't. Unfortunately, it's a reality we have to live with. Perhaps we could change it with stricter immigration guidelines and better education?

To answer your question is easy. They aren't here to become Americans, they literally believe that California belongs to mexico and they think that they have every right to be here.

It's very disrespectful of them towards the country they live in. But, the reason is the fact that most of the times don't need to learn the language - they work labor jobs with the other immigrants and live in their communities, where everything they need is provided. They don't need to communicate with Americans.( It's sad.

Why are there no white people on Asian television? There is white people on Canadian, American and latino television. In latin america we have diversity because we embraced european immigrants into high profile positions such as politicians, actors, business owners. Why doesn't Asian countries embrace white people into their country?

Robert, it's the will to integrate, to submerge into the culture of the country they have chosen to make home. It's not just Mexicans, it's also a lot of Asians, particularly Vietnamese and Chinese. The older they are when they immigrate, the more difficult it gets to learn a new language. But the main thing is that they don't desire to become Americans. They embrace their ethnicity and culture more than the American one. I am an immigrant to this country as well, but from early on, even before immigrating to the U.S., I listened to U.S. music, watched U.S. television, celebrated the 4th of July instead of embracing what I eventually left behind. On contrast, the Mexicans you are referring to listen to Mexican music, speak Spanish, wave the Mexican flag, celebrate Cinco de Mayo . . . you name it. Those who integrate are indistinguishable from "normal" Americans. In fact, our exterminator, whom I know for years now, came originally from Mexico. I would have never guessed and didn't know until he told me. He is an American now, just like me, and we cherish to be American by embracing what this great country has given us.
