How can one get started working for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)?

  • How can one get started working for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) or CBP? I'm a college student and am taking a class on CJ and I am interested in going down this career path. How would I get started? Are certain B.A.s wanted, how could I get experience? I speak, read, and write English, Spanish, Russia, and Ruminian. Thanks!

Stay in school and graduate. Any degree is helpful, but an Administration of Justice would be best. Languages are a plus, but not enough to overcome any shortcomings in the application process. Spanish is most useful; Russian and Romanian less so. Check out www.usajobs.gov and poke in "immigration and customs enforcement" in the search field. you can also use the location field. Ditto "customs and border protection." If you're near a big city, check the international flights and go visit CBP. There's a fair chance that you'll also be near an ICE office. Each will have the standard pamphlets about careers, but more importantly, you may talk to different people about their backgrounds and their experience(s) with each agency. Now for some opinion: These agencies are going to stay well-staffed because their workload is always going up. The pay is adequate (especially in rural areas but not too good if you live in an expensive area like New York or San Francisco). The work is varied. The technology keeps getting more and more sophisticated. But the work can be tiresome and boring, too- How would you like to spend a year asking people what they're bringing back to the US? It's a great job, but it's not perfect. I believe you'd have more opportunity to use your language background with CBP, but more intensely with ICE, when needed. Don't get yourself behind with student loans. Your credit worthiness will be a big HR factor. Ditto any history of recreational substances. (If I have to explain that, you don't qualify anyway.) Physical fitness is probably not a big factor. Just keep your BMI decent. For both jobs, you'll need to demonstrate some proficiency with handguns, so you may take a safety and marksmanship course. Don't worry about "tactical" gunning; each agency has their own training. Get the hang of trigger control and that's enough. ... Take care, Берегите себя!, cuidate, fi bucuros!
