A question about college & the SATs?

I have run out of tears....How do i pay for college? I am at a dead end :(?

  • As i type this tears are streaming down my face. All i want is an education, all i want is a chance to succeed in life. Nothing has ever been handed to me. I have had to work hard for the things i have. And i appreciate them very much. But at this point i feel like the world is against me. I have no where to go. I was accepted to a University an hour from where i live. I have also received a 10,000 academic scholarship. This school offers my major, i want to become a Fashion Designer. I have had this dream since i was 10. Making clothes for my barbies, and putting on shows. I worked hard in high school to make good grades, for college. I graduated in 2008 with a 3.8 wgt. GPA. a 1560 on my SATs And all the desire and passion to study the one thing i love. But i couldn't, You see i am not a citizen, i am not a resident. My case is in appeals. I am "permanent residency pending" AKA: Limbo Land. I do not qualify for any need based financial aid. Neither the school nor the government can help me. So last year i decided i would take the year off hope and pray my residency kicks in and work for a year to save up money. Well....a year has gone by and i have watched friends go off to college, i have seen friends waste their time drinking and partying, i have watched families with money receive financial aid. While i sit and work a 9-5. While i cry myself to sleep saying goodbye to all hope and optimism. I can't put my life on hold any longer! I cannot wait on the government any longer! I need, I want knowledge, an education, a degree. I want to stay up late studying for finals, i want to share a tiny room with a fellow classmate. i want to share a bathroom with an entire floor of people. I am ready! I have all the drive and determination to prove my worth. To show all of the people who doubted me, and knocked me down, that i can do it! But even with all the love, faith, and desire as most things do in life...it boils down to money. Money neither i or my parents have. I need 23,000 for my freshman year of college alone. And i need it by June 1st. The deadline for campus housing deposits. My first thought was a loan.....psych! My Limbo Land status keeps me or my parents from receiving a loan for education from our bank. The University itself won't give me a loan either. So now what, i have to pull out 23,000 out of thin air before June. In order to attend this University. How am i supposed to do that? Where am i supposed to find a loan? I can't even fill out FAFSA! I am at a complete dead end. I see no light at the end of this tunnel and it is breaking my heart. I.have no where to go. My question is simple: How do I pay for college?

  • Answer:

i know that you don't want to hear this but since you say that you have a 10000 dollars scholarships why don't you start by attending a community college and later on you can transfer to a university . You perhaps wanted to attend a top university in your state but my friend people don't always get what they want and that is life . I realized that a lot people told you to get a job it is a good idea . even though you do get a job right now , you won't be able to come up with 13000 dollars to add the money that you add right now . It is not going to happen . I hope that helps and good luck

Get a job. I know people that have paid their way through college working **** jobs starting at 16. No loans, no grants.. all money they earned. And the best part is, no crazy debt at the end!

I'm a lot older than you so I'll give you some advice, the kind you might not want to hear, but you need to try. There are times when what you WANT and what you can have collide. This is one of them. Make the best of it. Enroll at a 2 year community college. Many times the 100 and 200 level courses will transfer to the 4 year college. Do your best there this year and with some luck you can transfer next year.

many are in your situation, you could go back to your own country where you will be legal and go to school there hope it works out for you

There are tons of Americans that can't afford college, and they are not even in Limbo. Nobody said life was easy. I don't know why you just don't get a job and save up for college instead of relying on other money. Most of the people I know worked to go to college, after all, it's isn't free.

I feel for you, if anyone deserves it you do. I am joining the Coast Guard Reserves while I am in college and they will pay up to 4,500 dollars towards your education which covers mine. Maybe think of moving to where the college is so you can get instate tuition and joining a military branch, good luck, I'm sorry about your problem. Stop crying, if your determined and keep your work ethic you'll succeed in life...we need more people like you. And don't listen to that dumb jerkoff telling you that you shouldn't be here. The people that shouldn't be here are thugs and criminals that are hurting our society, not people trying to make something of themselves and work hard to benefit the world. Money should be given to you over people that sit on their *** all day doing drugs and collecting welfare checks.

don't take this the wrong way, but surely there is some kind of assistance you qualify for. i mean, i know people who don't even have a visa who get welfare. where is your country of origin? maybe you could consider college there. if you are still a citizen there, then you should qualify for anything they may have to offer.

Normally, smart people know if they aren't a resident or citizen they might have trouble getting loans to go to college, as they should.

I'm with you. I 100% relate. Something similar happened to me. Second year law school (all I ever wanted and saved for and worked for) the financial crisis hit and I was left without any student loans. I was dependent on private loans, and all of them shut down. I thought I'd lose my mind. I knew if I dropped out there was a great chance I wouldn't make it back. And I wasn't 21 or 25 anymore, so time was important. I started applying to every scholarship out there: 500 Dollars, 1000 Dollars, 2000 Dollars ... you name it! I also picked up a second job and slaved. I applied for more private loans with a marginally good interest rate, but I didn't care, I needed money to stay in school. I talked to ALL friends and all family, neighbors, employers. My family lives in another country so I had no co-signers for loans. Now I owe money to friends, family, student loans with fairly decent interest rates, credit cards ... etc. If you really want it, you got to get out there and ask for help. Ask everyone you know. Someone might have a job for you, someone may have money for you. I had one lady that I don't even know that much hear my story and give me 500 bucks. Put yourself out there and ask for help. You can do it!

Sorry to read you're overwhelmed. Your only option at this moment appears to be to save up for college, meaning you won't realistically have enough come June 1. You may have to wait until your residency gets ironed out before you can go to college. Based on your academic abilities, you're far too intelligent for all hope to be lost. This is a rough time, but it's not the end of your life. You're just hitting a delay.
