Would this company deny me a position if they found out that I worked ilegally in the past?

I applied for this airline job to work from home, and I listed all my jobs even the one I worked with a fake ssn (I worked with a visitor visa for 1 year) then I met my husband and I got residency through marriage but at the time I filed for adjustment of status at the same time I voluntarily filed for a waiver because I attempted to extend my visa before I met my husband and I didn't say I was working at the time so that was considered misrepresentation. It was hard because I could have been deported for my stupid mistake (the misrepresentation, not working illegally since they automatically forgive that when you marry a US citizen) Since then I always list that job in all my resumes and in the background checks, as a way to be as honest as possible, even when I once worked at the airport and never had a problem. But now this background check company is trying to verify my that specific job and they called the company I worked for but they couldn't find my records, so I told the person from the background check that I used another ssn but with my real name, that's why they couldn't find my records , so she asked me to show pay stubs or W3 from that job but I told her that I got rid of all of those things which is true. So now they can't really verify my job through the company and all the people I worked with stopped working there. I just have one friend that worked with me and I still get in touch that could verify that I worked there. I don't know what is going to happen. Can this company just deny me a position if I claimed I worked illegally in the past? Even though now I am a lawful resident of the United States? Thanks so much.

Answer:
They may not deny you the position because you worked illegally, but theymay well deny it if it appears you lied about your work background on your application when they're unable to verify your employment claims. That's why companies do background checks and if they can't verify your background, they would be stupid to employ you - otherwise, why bother doing the checks in the first place.

The company tries to verify your integrity in this case, not your legal status. It's up the them do decide how to deal with the situation. They can deny you the position on the basis of failing character requirements or decide that it's a minor matter and hire you anyway.
