How do I make sure my kids get dual citizenship?
-
I don't have kids... but when I have them I would like them to have dual citizenship (EU and American). My husband has European citizenship and I have American citizenship. Is it easier to have kids in the U.S. and apply for the European (in this case Italian) citizenship at the consulate, or is it easier to have kids in Europe and apply for American citizenship from there? I just want to make sure when I have kids they can get as many opportunities as possible, and it would be a shame if they lost the opportunity of dual citizenship because of ignorance from my part. Thank you.

Answer:
In your case you are talking about dual American and Italian citizenship so it's fairly straightforward whichever country the child is born in. If the child is born outside of America you will need to register the birth with the American Embassy. The child will have an Italian parent so will be automatically Italian. All you need to do is apply for a passport for the child to exercise that citizenship. Nowhere in Europe is citizenship given on the basis of birth in that country unless one of the parents is a citizen of that country or is legally settled i.e. has permanent resident status.

There is no such thing as European citizenship. Europe is a continent consisting of numerous countries, all of which have their separate policies. For example, Norway and Denmark outright prohibit multiple citizenship, Germany and Austria have a specific process in place that requires a permission from the government, the U.K. requires physical presence of the parent for jus sanguinis to apply, France makes a spouse a citizen after 3 years, even if they never set foot on French soil, Italy applies jus sanguinis into the 3rd (grandparents) generation, and so on. What citizenship your children will have depends on so many factors, it's totally unpredictable right now.
