Average house insurance in Canada?

Where to live...Canada or USA?

  • My wife (puertorrican- american citizen), my little one (6 months old, canadian- american citizen) and I (canadian-argentinian citizen) live in Toronto, Canada. Since few month ago I was thinking what would be our life in USA. We have visited Houston, TX one year ago. I work as mechanical draftsperson (Autocad and Solidworks) my wife is administrative assistant, our english is good but not the best, we have spanish accent in our english. My wife has sicked cell anemia and we don't know how medical insurance will covers her in USA. Canada is very good country with universal medical insurance which covers my wife and my whole family. We are paying our modest house. I am thinking that maybe there are more opportunity in USA, since I want to change of work and there is not many opportunities right here. If we will move to USA we are going to do with legal papers. How are the opportunities in USA (Houston)? How is the economy? How are the medical insurance when you have a pre- existing condition like my wife has?

  • Answer:

What is more important to you? Your wife's health and spending your life with her, or more opportunities at employment? If you can't afford to pay for health care in the USA, you die. That is the simple truth. You can go to a hospital emergency room, but all the do is stabilize you and then send you home or back on the streets. They do not cure your illness nor provide the long term care a person needs. There have been many news stories in the last two years about hospitals taking ER patients with long term illnesses to "Skidrow" where the homeless live, and dropping them off.

Stay in Canada. It'll be many years if ever before the US wises up and adopts a viable national health insurance program with necessary reforms to bring down our spending, which is the highest in the world. A majority of personal bankruptcies are due to high medical bills, and many of these folks actually had health insurance yet still couldn't afford to pay for what the health insurance wouldn't cover. .

I say stay in Canada. It's stable here with great health care.

the grass is NOT greener on the other side - you will have to pay for all her health care - so life will be very expensive strongly suggest you stay in canada for now while the economy is so poor, - unemployment in the USA is running around 30% - that covers all those looking for jobs AND those who have stopped looking for work. strongly suggest you STAY in Canada for now.

stay where you are ...

The health care situation in Canada is more stable. I think Obama has forced insurance companies to give health care even if they have pre existing condition. However, your premiums might be higher. Contact various Insurance companies to find out. Also, if a republican comes to power, Obama's health care reforms will be gone, so insurance companies will not be required to cover your wife's preexisting condition. US economy is not doing very well, go give job interviews if you'd like, but don't go to the US without a job offer in hand.

When you are first hired there is no proof of insurabililty needed. If you refuse your company's insurance and later change your mind proof of insurability can be required.
