What do you think about synthetic ice?

What do you think Immigration raids continue The person ICE came to see was an employee of Electrolux?

  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) visited the home of a Springfield alderman Thursday night amid what appears to be increased enforcement against illegal immigrants.Alderman Clay Sneed, who lives on Kinneys Road, rents out space in his house along with his other rental properties in the city. He was out on a call for his security company when ICE visited house between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday. My wife said there were some vans here,” Sneed said. “They weren’t concerned about anything we were doing. They were just concerned about someone that was renting downstairs.”The person ICE came to see was an employee of Electrolux. For many residents, every day life continued unabated as signs of ICE’s presence were subtle, yet present.A local award-winning Mexican restaurant was closed for "plumbing problems" for the second time this month. The first time was last week when ICE activity was confirmed in the city by Springfield police officials, who were working with them. The restaurant reopened Saturday. At Wal-Mart, the lines of those paying for their presents and groceries were almost entirely devoid of Hispanics leading up to Christmas, employees have confirmed.“I’ve noticed that for the past week and a half, [the presence of Hispanics] has decreased significantly,” Michael Greene, who works in electronics at the store, said. “Usually they are buying cards for prepaid phones and they just haven’t been there at all.”The presence of ICE and rumors of their presence have been circulating through the city since allegations about the hiring of illegal immigrants at Electrolux Home Products emerged earlier this month. The company has since released a statement that a system – called E-verify -- to check the authenticity of documents provided by potential employees. According to the Department of Homeland Security website, E-verify is “an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration that allows participating employers to electronically verify the employment eligibility of their newly hired employees.” In addition to the firings, a number of Hispanics are preparing should they need to leave the county. Sneed, a notary public, has helped approximately 30 people in recent weeks prepare their paperwork. “They’re going home,” Sneed said. “I don’t see anything wrong with helping these people leave the country.” http://tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071226/MTCN0301/71226017/1304/MTCN03
