How can I become a doctor in India and Canada?

How can one become a doctor as an international student in US/Canada?

  • I am a foreign citizen and received my undergraduate degree a few years ago in an accredited college in the US. After working for a few years in business in Asia, I am considering moving back to North America and making a career move into medicine. Medical schools in the US are not an option as tuitions are sky high and international students are not eligible for loans. Getting an MD degree in Canada seems to be a good alternative from a financial perspective, although there are many issues: 1) applying as an international student 2) any restrictions on foreign citizens relating to residency placement or other parts of the process of becoming a doctor 3) if I do become an accredited doctor in Canada, whether it is possible to practice in the US. If you have knowledge on the medical field or immigration law, could you kindly share? Thank you.

Medical schools in Canada won't cost significantly less than US schools. I recommend you look again at their pricing and remember than Canadian universities have two sets of prices -- one for Canadians and one for international students. That later is usually four to five times that which Canadians pay. If you can find a school which takes international students, you are looking at $70,000+ per eight months in graduate programs when you factor in tuition, fees, and living costs. In addition, due to limited seating, most Canadian medical schools do not take international students to start with. The few that might will have extremely high standards for admissions. In programs which require work as part of admissions, you will need to apply for a work permit in addition to your study permit. Again, few Canadian schools take foreign students in medicine. If you have a Canadian medical degree, you can certainly practice in the US. However, like in Canada, each state in the US has its own licensing requirements. You will have to take board exams, submit to background checks, and join the state college/board responsibility for licensing doctors. In most cases, doctors are in such high demand in the US that hospitals willing to offer you a job will help you with courses and cover fees associated with exams. Most 'foreign' students wanting to go to medical school in Canada by first obtaining permanent residency or under various provincial programs which allow them to apply for permanent residency in exchange for practicing in Canada for X years. Once you have your permanent residency you get to attend school at the Canadian rates and upon graduating you can practice in some (often remote) hospital in the province. Look up "provincial nominee [province name]" for details -- remembering that not of provinces have medical programs in their universities.
