How can I bring my mother to the USA?

Bring husbands mother to visit USA?

  • I am a us citizen and my husband is originally from Ecuador. We would like to bring his mother just to visit here maybe like a month then she would go back to Ecuador. Is there a way to sponsor her so that she would be able to come here because I have heard people say that a lot of times visas are not given. Does anyone here have experience in this? Is it costly? if so how much?

    Technically speak, no. There are no sponsors for tourists and it is entirely up to the applicant to prove that they are eligible for a B2 visa, it is also up to the Officer adjudicating the applications and interviewing the applicant on the day of their interview to approve or deny a visa. There is nothing you can do to guarantee anything. However a letter of support stating that she will be staying with you and you will be financially supporting her stay wouldn't hurt.

You cannot help your mother-in-law qualify for a tourist visa. She must qualify on her own by showing that she has strong ties to Ecuador and is unlikely to overstay like your husband did before he got his green card by marrying you. As you and your husband have probably figured out, once your husband naturalizes as a US citizen three years after marriage, he can then petition his overstaying mother for a green card. That is why US consular officials rarely approve visit visas for immediate family members unless they have good jobs, own property, and have plenty of family remaining in the home country. Overstayers make it harder for legitimate visitors to get approved. If your mother-in-law decides to apply, she must be truthful on the application form. Lying and getting caught will guarantee a denial.
