How can I work with a foreign degree in the USA?

  • I am studying vet in Brazil and in the future I pretend to go to another country and work as a vet. And what should I do to make my Brazilian degree vaild in the USA?

    Go to the Website of the AMVA (American Veterinarian Medical Association) http://www.avma.org/ Or go to the Webpage http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp It tells you how to get certified if you're a foreign educated veterinarian. I'm sorry but I don't understand their terminology, though you probably will be familiar with some of it. Good luck!

You should see if the requirements are the same, because I know that for doctors coming from the middle east their degrees aren't recognized in the US- even after having practiced for years. Even other careers such as a hairdresser, my friends mother practiced for over 20yrs in the Caribbean and is moving to the US and they told her she has to sit and exam and go through 2 years of school to meet the requirements necessary to practice in the states - and this is after 20 years of experience. So look into seeing if the requirements are met and are compatible with the US - and what you can do to ensure that you are on the right track. If there is no way around it then you may have to sit another exam, and go about schooling for another couple years. You can make your life simpler if that is the case, and study in the US?? Just a suggestion.

i'd call the U.S. Embassy in Brazil and see what they say. that probably the best way to go.

I think you have to take the certification exam in whatever state you plan to practice.

Not only will you have to secure a visa, you would also have to pass the veternarian's test in the state in which you want to work. Both are difficult to obtain.

If you have an idea of where in the US you would like to work (which state) they will have a certification board that can tell you what you might need to do to get certified in that state.

The system is that you have to get a licence. To get a licemce you have to have papers. For those papers you must have visited a recognised school. Only american schools are recognised. But hey, Arnie became a governor. You can become a vet. Be prepared to wash dishes untill your licence clears. It can take years. (no kidding) And that is when they let you in.
