How do you get married in Canada?

So I just got married in Canada, and want to know how can I get it registered in the US?

  • Will they recognize it? Or do I need to still register it with the US courts? Just a little confused on what I need to do now...(just to clarify I am a US Citizen and my bride is Canadian and we got our legal marriage done in Canada)

  • Answer:

You marriage is legal. The US will recognize your marriage regardless of where you get married. All you need is show your marriage certificate if requested. Congratulations.

There is no need to register your marriage in the US. I don't think you could even if you wanted to. The US automatically recognizes marriages performed in other countries as long as the union is legal in both countries (for example the US wouldn't recognize a marriage performed in another country between you and your dog because that wouldn't be legal in the US). As long as you could have legally been married in the US, your marriage is recognized here.

there is no need for you to register your marriage in the united states. the united states recognizes all marriages done legally in other countries. if you wish to bring your bride to the united states however, you will need to file for a spousal visa. she will not automatically be allowed to immigrate here just because you are married. for further information on that http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1315.html
