Handmade soap as wedding favors?
-
We are getting married in May 2012. We are expecting around 150 guests. There is a small local soap store in my city that makes handmade soap with all natural ingredients that I love and buy at all the time. I found out that they can make soap for wedding favors and when I first found out I was set on using that as our wedding favors. Then I thought that maybe the men at the wedding might not have as much appreciation for the soap as the women would. But then I thought, well aren't most things at a wedding more for the enjoyment of the women. For example the "beautiful" wedding dress, the "pretty" center pieces, etc. What do you think? Should I just go ahead with the soap or should I do wedding favors that can be enjoyed by both sexes like a little bag of Hershey's Kisses or something?

Answer:
As a soap and candle maker, I will probably sound biased when I say this but I would go with the handmade soaps. For one, EVERYONE does the Hershey's kisses in a bag. It's so overdone, it's becoming as traditional as the "something old, something new...". I got married a month ago, and my grandmother's advice was "Don't give people anything you wouldn't get for yourself". And I think that's the best advice. You seem to have put a lot of thought into the handmade soap idea and you genuinely love them. Your wedding guests should have a piece of you when they leave not some randomly selected item that has no real meaning to you. Also, I sell my soaps (and candles) as a side gig and while most of the people that buy from me are women, I get plenty of calls from ladies asking me for more because their husbands have used it up lol. Go with the soaps.

I don't think it matters. Men use soap too, even if it's in a feminine color or shape I doubt most will really care. Though to comprimise you could pick a unisex scent like vanilla, cinnamon, juniper, ect...

if you want soaps go with that just have neutral scents, such as musk, eucalyptus, mint, chamomile, oatmeal, etc... so that both men and women can try it.

I'm sure everyone would love handmade soap. That is a wonderful idea. If you want to do something else try giving out the Hershey's, but also maybe have a photographer take pictures of everyone as a group and hand those out in the end, or by mail.

I really like this idea. I usually tell people to skip the favor if it's not editable because the favor will either end up in the trash or left behind, but this is something your guests could use, most likely won't end up in the back of a cabinet, and if there are any left behind, you can add to your personal collection.

Personally, I love the idea. It's different and fun. A lot of times people don't pay too much attention to favors anyway. Go with something you love for sure, and I'm certain many others will love it too.

Men don't care about/notice favors, no matter what they are. So don't let that be your guide.

I think it's an awesome favor, as long as its unscented. You wouldn't want a room filled with 150 bars of scented soap. On the men, I'm kind of on the fence. Some might like it, but it's also possible to get them something different. I've seen some very cute can openers, for example, that they'd really use. Or wine stoppers. I personally am not a big fan of Hershey's kisses. They're so forgettable it's not worth the trouble. I'd either find something a little unique or just not bother. But I already know a lot of people in this section don't agree with me on that!

Actually... Men pretend not to notice soap, but they do. If the packaging isn't too feminine, and the scents are more neutral and not flowery, I think it's a great favor. You'd be surprised, men will use it. And if they don't, their wives or girlfriends will steal it.

For me, no. I have sensitive skin although these are all natural, but many people are "set in their ways when it comes to soap"---I would not use, just me Many people are have allergies, etc. and are hesitant about using something new. I always prefer something edible.
