Wedding dress alterations went bad....(this is a long one)?

  • I found my perfect wedding dress of my dreams. i had in my mind i wanted a Cinderella dress however all the dresses in that kinda style was out of my budget.... one day i came across a dress that was PERFECT style color and price. but the only thing about it,that wasn't perfect was it wasn't my size it was one size to small. the dress would zip up HALF way but couldn't get up all the way so i took it in to get altered. i took it into a local dry cleaners that has some on that works for them that does alteration. she looked at the dress and suggested that i put a lace up backing on it i was ok that sounds awesome.. so she does the work i come back after it is "finished" i was upset the woman left the zipper that didn't even zip up on the dress and she ended up putting loop holes for the dress on the inside part of the dress.. so when i have it on you see the zipper just there the lace dont cover it up.. along with this when i have the dress on you can see my whole back.. an the lace up go all the way down to the top of my butt..she l has my dress zipping up as much as possible then where it wont go up any more the lace start ( it looks bad)so i cant wear a bra or panties cause they both will show. the lace she used a very thin white cord.. i feel it will break. she also bustled the back up( 3 little snaps ) and hemmed up my dress. my dress also bow in the front.. you can see down my dress and the arm pit area is loose. I ended up telling her i wasn't happy but thanked her for her work. i asked her is there a way you can add fabric she said yes i can do that...and asked her to remove the zipper it looks tacky she said she cant it needs to be there, also asked her to replace the cord she put on it with a silk ribbon or something more thicker.. she said well i dont know if i can do that. she is now "fixing" my dress but honestly idont think it will come out as planned. when iwas in the store talking to the woman that was doing the alterations the manager came over and started asking what i wanted.. i told him .. then he had the gull to ask me so when is the wedding? i told him a yr from now" then he said well why did you get a dress that didnt even fit you if your not getting married for a year from now.. i was so upset and felt so disrespected.. . when i came back to get my dress ( the first time 0 i ended up paying them at that time.. thats what they requested.. it was 192.00 now that i am waiting for the dress to be fixed i am so worried it will not come our right. if it isnt what way iam expecting what do i do.. do i ask for some of my money if so how much? do i just say "screw it take my dress and find someone else? i dont know i am frustrated please help!!!

Please, right now, today, this moment.....call them and stop any more work on your dress. This seamstress is not qualified to work on your dress. No how, no way. The zipper should not have been kept in the dress under ANY circumstances with this lace up back design. Call the head of the Dry Cleaner chain and demand your money back for this hack job. I am a qualified seamstress who has converted zip up dresses to lace up and I know it can be done and done well. If you need a letter stating so, I am a professional and can provide you with a statement. She does not know what she is doing and if you let her have at it, she will ruin your dress. Any zipper can be removed, she just does not know how to remove it. Sounds like everything she did to your dress was wrong, wrong, wrong. And, how dare them to insult you about your time line. That is absolutely irrelevant to these alterations!! I would be some pissed off, too. Take the dress back home and search, search, search for a qualified seamstress. There is one out there who can help you. I wish I lived in your town, I would alter your dress to fit you beautifully and nobody would even know it was not part of the original design!!

I do empathize with your situation. I am not hopeful that the re-do will be any more successful than the first alteration. This person obviously is in over her head and has insufficient experience to be working with a wedding gown. As you are learning the hard way and perhaps some other reader will learn from your experience, knowing how sew and knowing how to sew and fit well enough to work on a wedding gown are not the same thing. You can go in tomorrow and ask for you dress in what ever condition it is in. Ask for your money back. If they refund it great, if not, see below. You can try to find an truly experienced dressmaker to clean up the mess. It will no doubt cost as much or more than the original fiasco. Ask for references and check them. Look at projects in progress. Listen to your intuition about how you feel in their presence. Take lots of photos of the mess on and off your body. You most likely have a case for small claims court if you want to invest the time and energy in filing. AND the dry cleaner manager was indeed rude. It is wise to plan ahead for a wedding. Good luck.

First mistake, you went to a DRY CLEANERS. You need to get that dress back now and go to a professional seamstress if you really want to fix this dress, otherwise, you're out all that money and will need to find a quick inexpensive replacement dress. WHO in their RIGHT MIND would leave a zipper on a dress after adding lace? WHO!?!?! They were going for functionality sure, maybe, but not looks at all and a good seamstress will fit the dress to you perfectly! What a disgrace!! Demand your money back! Go as high up as you can! That manager is a piece of crap who deserves to be fired! A seamstress would understand that you bought a dress too small, but probably have discouraged you had he or she known beforehand!

Never take your dress to a dry cleaners for alterations. Get your dress back now and request a full refund. They didn't do the work properly and you will need to spend money at a professional seamstress/tailor to have the dress fixed and altered properly. You have plenty of time to find a good seamstress. There are several ways to find one. Referrals are always a good way. Read reviews and of course go and meet them. Talk to them. Do they sound knowledgeable, confident. Do they have pictures or examples of their work? Ask all these questions and pick someone you feel comfortable with. Don't pick solely on price. You want quality work and a professional so you may end up paying a little more but you will be very happy with the result. This is your special day and you don't want it ruined because it your beautiful dress isn't perfect. Good luck

My question is why would you let them hack at your dress again? Go back and get it from them immediately. Find a real seamstress to do the work.
