Why do Italians drink so much wine?

Do almost all people drink wine and beer? That's all my venue reception will serve?

  • I (the bride) HATE beer and wine, so I really can't judge this situation properly. Our alcohol package only includes beer and wine (and we'll also get champagne for toasts, which I also hate, ha!) The venue will not accept cash payments for drinks outside our package selection (there were no other packages including spirits). They can provide them but only if it's charged to ONE account ( a bar tab) so this is fine for me, but we can't have one account for everyone who wants spirits so the bar tab will strictly be for me and my sister (who also doesn't drink beer and wine) My question to you all out there, is this a problem? Do 99% of people who drink, drink beer and wine and will be happy with that? All the weddings I have been to have had the option for cash payments if you wanted spirits. Hmm....

  • Answer:

Guests tend to drink what is free, cheapest and offered to them. If the bartenders tell them that they cannot have something, or that it isn't free they will almost always pick something that's free. I'm not the biggest wine drinker, and I'm allergic to beer (hops in it) so this arrangement wouldn't do me much good ha ha. I must say, however, that I find this arrangement very strange for a venue. No cash payments accepted for other drinks? Are they nuts? They are losing out on a lot of money.. Something I'd recommend you do is make a large batch of an alcoholic punch (like Sangria- it goes with anything) and have that offered to guests in lieu of cocktails, and a variety of Jell-O shots. Tell the venue that if they will not allow your guests to pay cash for cocktails, that you want to provide your own for people such as you and I who do not care for wine or beer. Ask if they would tack on a corkage fee and how much it would be. You are a customer of the venue, so if you push hard enough they should be able to work something out with you. After all, you're paying them right? If they do nothing, then I would recommend complaining to their management. I see this as a simple request with no reason for them not to do it. You have everything to make cocktails, so why not actually make them??

People will drink what is available. The majority of people who do drink usually drink beer or wine so it really shouldn't be a big deal. A bar tab for a select few is a bad idea. It may not go over well with your guests who also might want something else, it might come off as a pick & choose favorites type of thing regardless of how true that is or not. Plus, a cash bar is tacky anyway.

That depends on the wine. I don't like dry, red wines. I only like wines that have a balanced sugar and acidity content. In other words, young, late-season whites of pinks. I can't stand beer. But most people who drink don't seem to mind beer. For example, Pabst blue ribbon. X-P Also, not serving spirits tends to cut down on the late evening drunken drama among your guests.

If all they have is wine and beer then that is what your guests will drink. If they don't like it tell them to throw their own wedding. This one is yours.

Well as the bride you should be able to drink what you want. Most people will drink whatevers available (like the other posters said). the problem is what you will say if the other guests start wanting the same drinks as you and then it seems they wont be able to pay for their own? Thats a bit unusual but i dont see it as a major problem! I would be happy with it (wine is my drink of choice anyway) and hopefully anyone who isnt will have the good manners to stay quiet!

You and your sister cannot walk around with drinks that your guests cannot have. It's just rude. As the bride, you shouldn't drink much. Maybe one or two. Then switch over to water or juice. You do not want to get drunk at your wedding . Relax and go with the flow.

It's certainly preferable to offer a nice selection of hard alcohol (we offered an aged scotch, and high-end rum, gin, vodka), but if it's not possible it's not possible. It won't be the end of the world.

that is probably fine, but you will have to have diferent kinds of wine, red, white, sweet, dry

hate beer, wine is fine. maybe some orange juice for those who don't drink alcohol
