What do you know about Philadelphia's City hall?

Does anyone know how long a city hall marriage takes?

  • I'm wondering if we will exchange rings or it's say "I do" and we're out of there. We canceled our church wedding and we're headed for Chicago City Hall. We're just not sure it will be romantic! Can anyone offer ideas? Thank you

    Why did you cancel your church wedding? A wedding in City Hall takes approximately 15 minutes and there is no romantic atmosphere attached to City Hall. But if you want a romantic wedding, reschedule your church wedding, but make it at a small little country church outside of Chicago, invite some of your closest friends and family holding the guest list to maybe 20 to 25 people and exchange vows making up your own loving words. Just have made of honor and best man. Before the wedding, make arrangements for lunch or dinner at a nice restaurant and have a small, intimate celebration. Send out handwritten wedding invitations..with an RSVP and your phone number. That is what I would do.

I'm also planning a city hall wedding. Although my fiancee and I realize that it won't be romantic, we think that the act of getting married itself will be enough for us. Afterwards, we're going out to dinner at a dessert bar (with a huge wine selection) and staying the night at a hotel with a jacuzzi. If you want to make it romantic, go to a bed and breakfast and buy the honeymoon package. Just because the ceremony isn't romantic doesn't mean that it can't be afterwards.

If I were getting married in City Hall- the only romance that I would need is to look deeply in my fiances ees and see the love he has for me. i dont need flowers, music, or anythign else as long as i have him. You can try to wear a pretty outfit, but to be honest, the real romance is afterwards. Reserve a HUGE suite at a hotel for a few days and disappear with each other. that is romantic enough :0) Him touching you should be the only excitement you want at that point.

You'll have a civil ceremony and usually the officiant will include the bit about the ring exchange- s/he might ask beforehand if you'll exchange rings. It takes 15 minutes or so. Some city halls require an appointment, some say first come, first served. It can be romantic if you dress up, carry a small bouquet or put flowers in your hair. There will probably be a random photographer standing around to sell you an instant photo, so I'd go ahead and get it. Afterwards, go to lunch at a nice place (Nick's Downtown on South Clark is nice) and tell EVERYONE you just got married-- people will celebrate with you.

I did one in December in Michigan. Took about 5 minutes. Took longer for the major to fill out the paperwork. Good luck. Pretty basic vows, unless you want to add some, which is permissable. We're consecrating the vows at a church at a later date.

Honestly, a city hall marriage is not going to be all that romantic - sorry to tell you that. I got married at the courthouse and it took all of 10-15 minutes. We had friends and family there - about 7 or 8 people besides us and we got to take pictures. Fortunately, there wasn't another couple waiting for us afterwards.
