Name change questions?

Name change & marriage license questions?

  • The county clerk told us to return completed license & they would give me paperwork then to be able to start the name change process. She said this was usually much quicker & easier. Our preacher insisted on mailing it in. I plan to call the county clerk office about this, but obviously it's the weekend so I can't until tomorrow. How long did it take to recieve a copy of your marriage license? Even if it was mailed, do I need to go to the clerks office or can I to be able to speed the process up? Also, I had planned on taking his last name & moving my maiden name as my middle name. When do I do this? Most things I found online said that I'd be asked when I got my marriage license but I wasn't. There was also no where on the license to fill in what my married name would be. Did anyone ask what your married name would be? If so, when did they? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

Our Pastor mailed our paperwork in also but we received our license and some social secuity paperwork back from the county within a week. You can change your name when you fill out the social security paperwork, if I remember correctly it requires a copy of your marriage license but it will be returned to you. When youre filling out the social security paperwork it asks what you'd like your 'new name' to be and that is where you can move your maiden name to your middle name or just add your husbands name to your current last name. Mail it in and then a few weeks after that you will have a new social security card with your new legal name on it.

I also kept my maiden name as my middle name and took my husband's last name. Go to www.bridelaw.com - you'll find everything you need to know there. One tip that was espeically helpful to me in the weeks following my wedding was to make a few copies of your official marriage certificate and carry it with you everywhere. You never know when you'll need it - the bank, the DMV, etc. It helps to have a copy with you.

They won't ask for your new name on your marriage license. Not until you get a new social security card and Drivers license.

I took his last name and moved my maiden name to where my middle name goes, too. I think it better defines who I am. I think the middle initial thing was a lot more annoying than the last name, because everyone "expects" you to change your last name; the middle initial thing bothered me a lot at first. Now I'll correct it on some things but not others. There should be a place to fill in your new name on your marriage license, though.

When the preacher fill out the paper worker, it takes 5-10 business day depend on location of the wedding. The in my opinion the best time to make a name change is after you received the marriage license. The first thing you want to do is brace your self and get ready for the DMV that is where you want to start first to make it legal.

The name change starts after you get your marriage certificate back. You go to the DMV and the Social Security office and fill out their paper work. It is there that you change the name to what you want it to be. After my first marriage, I took my maiden name as my middle name....I don't recommend this, it's rather confusing. Try this: Mary Ann Smith-Jones. But then comes the question as to what the last name of the children will be. I've been married 3 times and the longest it took was 4 weeks. That was back in 1981. Last time, I had it back when I returned from my honeymoon. Each time, the paperwork was mailed in by the officiant.

We eloped.. the preacher filled out the marriage certificate and sent it to the courthouse, they stamp it with the official seal and sent us that one. It took about a week for us to get it back. I took it to the Social Security office and told them my new name. I signed a paper there and they sent me a new card. I took my marriage certificate and my social security card to dmv and got all that changed (drivers license and car registrations). A little time consuming but still easy.
