Where can I order a Canadian Diamond ring?

What do I do about my engagement ring?

  • My boyfriend proposed to me the first week of January and the ring he got me is perfect. It's just what I wanted and I love it, but I noticed that some of the small diamonds on the out side where crooked. Then about after a month two for them fell out. So he took it back and the man said that when they sized it it must have stretched out the brackets and they should have caught that. They replaced the diamonds that were missing and said they fixed the brackets and that it should last us a long long time. When he brought it back home I looked at it and the diamonds were still crooked. My fiance said that he'll just pay the extra money and take it to someone who knows what they're doing. Well yesterday I saw that another diamond has fallen out. I don't want to take it anywhere else and pay extra money. They should fix it and do it right. This has become personal now. But what do I do if I go back and the same thing happens? What if they just keep giving me the run around? Can I tell them to order a new ring just like it in my size so the don't have to mess with it? I'm mad and I just don't know what I can do about it or how much you can ask a jewelry store to do for no charge.

  • Answer:

Parts of this are a little garbled, and it matters in terms of the warranty. You say you immediately noticed some stones were cracked - did you take it back then? It sounds like you wore it for a couple of months before returning it. So maybe parts of this depend on the warranty. If it was a cheap ring (or a bad jeweler) there may not be much they can do, but as long as you don't mind giving up the original and getting a replacement, that probably makes the most sense.

The first mistake is that your boyfriend purchased a ring that was faulty. He should have done a better job making sure there were no flaws with the ring before he bought it. Your second mistake was not checking the ring, under a magnifier, the first time you had it repaired. This time take it back again, demand that they fix it properly, and do not leave the store with the repaired ring unless it is 100% perfect to your satisfaction. If the ring is not perfect contact the Better Business Bureau and handle the problem through them. They will contact the company on your behalf and try to find a solution for you. If they don't fix the problem they will end up with a negative rating with the BBB and that will affect their future business. I have solved problems through BBB before. Just make sure you keep every scrap of paperwork and photographic evidence of the problems.

I would take the ring back to where you purchased [he] it and demand that they order a new ring in your size. If they give you a hard time, ask for the name and address of the regional manager or the owner of the shop and write a letter. Ask them if they are members of the Chamber of Commerce and also let them know that you will be drafting a letter to the Better Business Bureau.

In the UK every local authority has a trading standards department, I would think that they have something simillar in the US. Contact them & ask them what your rights are.

Is this a local jeweler or a chain jeweler? In each case, you should be able to file a better business bureau complaint. Also look at the paperwork that came with it and what type of warranty it has.

Take the ring back to the place where it was purchased (with all of your documents/receipts/etc) and say that you want to speak with a manager. Explain what's happened and say you want a new setting (you can reuse the diamonds, since it sounds like they're fine, they just aren't set properly) because you were sold a defective product. Be polite but firm. This isn't your fault and it should be fixed. Diamonds should not be falling out of the setting after a few days of normal wear.
