How do I become a legally ordained minister?

How can I become an ordained minister, online?

  • Two of my friends are getting married in May. We are all very close, and they would like for me to perform the wedding ceremony. My question is, where can I get ordained online, from a legitimate and accredited source. I have seen a few websites but it more or less seems like you sign up and youre a minister. That doesnt feel right to me. Suggestions please Thank you!

First of all, you need to see if your state even allows online ordained ministers to marry people. If they do, you will need to register with the state.

You can get ordained online for free and legally perform marriages in any U.S. state. All you have to do is go online and put in your name and you are ordained. www.themonastery.org is a popular site. That is because the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prevents the government from passing laws either endorsing or impeding religion. As such, the government has no say in whether a church is "legitimate" or not. As such, the government doesn't differentiate between a Catholic Bishop, and a random guy who printed up an ordination certificate from the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. They are each equally valid.

You do not need to get "ordained". Go to your county clerks office and get sworn in as a "Deputy Commissioner of Civil Weddings"...you pay a $75.00 fee, and it's a one time deal( one fee, one wedding). They will explain to you what you need to legally have in the ceremony (there are certain things you MUST ask), and how to fill out the license etc. Good Luck
